Now if someone could just get PJ to submit picks every week, you can probably bankrupt most of the books in Vegas.

Not exactly. Many may very well have success betting $20 per game recreationally. That doesn't mean they're packing their shite and moving to Vegas.

But I saved myself in 2012 by getting all my losings back by betting on Obama to win the election.

What was the payout for that one? If you asked the poli board, Romney was a lock

Not really. I'm up since I started sports betting 4 years ago. However, amounts wagered are small enough to where my overall winnings are largely insignificant. I would have nowhere near enough confidence in myself to take it up as a career at this point or start betting significant sums of money.

It's really not overly difficult to pick winners at a good enough percentage to profit long-term if betting properly. Most people lose money because they improperly bet amounts, bet for action, start betting more games because they had a good day yesterday, etc.

I just dont see the point in gambling on sports unless youre in it to make money. The whole 'it makes it more exciting' reason they do it is kinda lame

I have a confession to make. I don't gamble, so my previous post was a lie. :/

Meh.

My original comment was towards how over the course of years on this site and this board, any time a thread comes up asking about sports betting, everyone seems to 'be up' on their bookie. Its amazing(well not really) that this site has the best sports bettors

To each his own. And I'm definitely in it to make money - it just helps that it's also fun. We each have a different idea of "recreational value." If I break even over a football season, I say I really came out on top given the recreational value gambling gives me. This is helped by the fact that the monetary value is low enough to where, if I lose it all, it's not like it will cancel Christmas for us.

Plus I think there's some egotistical satisfaction to "being right" about sports.

or bet on South African Crickets league.

Money management is indeed the biggest thing. 60% winning pct doesn't matter if your "LOCK" big wagers are part of the 40%

It's not that they're lying. It's just that the people who are losing are less likely to reply about it a thread.

Well it does make it more exciting but its fun as a guessing game. I have a hundred in my account and bet 5 dollars on games I think I'm smarter than Vegas on. I've lost that hundred before, but it provides a lot of entertainment before I do.

I'm documenting my picks on TD this year. I have excel spreadsheets broken into years with filters for sports, type of bets, etc which allows me to actually gauge where I am on particular sports & bets so I can focus on things that do make me a more profitable better. I realize it's not the norm for guys posting on TD, but it's not impossible to win.

It's not incredibly difficult, but you have to commit to doing it correctly if you want to consistently make money. This is why most people fail.

I put in a lot of effort to win as little as I do, but I do it because I find it an enjoyable mental exercise. Some people read; some people play the stock market; I prefer to gamble on sports. The people who do it simply for an adrenaline rush have little to no shot of making money long term.

It's like the "what is your salary" threads on the OT...Somone who makes $9 an hour for a career isn't going to chime in

I dunno, makes me feel like a big shot when I cash out a >$5k ticket at a Vegas casino. It's a huge rush when you win a bet.

Of course it wouldn't make sense to someone that doesn't enjoy gambling.

And its human nature to more vividly remember wins than losses unless it was a bad luck loss. It's why tracking bets would give a lot of people a reality check.

This month? Probably lost a little short of 30k.

Are you a professional gambler. I've never gambled because I have something of a compulsive personality. I think I'd get into real financial trouble pretty quickly. I have often thought it would be fun to gamble as a recreation (with no real expectations), but I'd only be willing to spend about $500 a month. I'm too afraid I'd luck up at some point and become convinced that I was good at it.
