With the amount of shooting fouls these days it is smarter to shoot a jump shot. Also the percentage is lower.

It's a specialized skill that requires thousands of hours of specific repetition to develop; with the game increasingly being played in two areas-- within 5 feet of the rim, and 20+ feet from it-- there's no emphasis in developing the skill, when it's easier to simply teach fade-away jump shooting form and how to attack the rim, as those translate over to the rest of the game.

A dominant hook is virtually impossible to stop, without crippling a team to bring a help defender-- and even then, it's really hard. The downside is that everyone thinks they should be able to put the ball on the court and take it to the hole, even if they're 7 feet tall.

You nailed it, just an extremely difficult shot to learn and master. It's what helped Kareem stay so potent even though he dealt with waning athleticism.

This. ^^^^^^^

If the hook shot were to make a true comeback, it would probably have to be led by a foreign player. More specifically, an Asian or African player. American and European born players are too caught up in the modern "cool" style of play, nobody wants to be the guy out there throwing up sky-hooks.

Brooke Smith from Stanford could do it. But she had enough of a height advantage that it wasn't really needed.

Espn says its not sexy, so it's gone from the game.

Kyle Wiltjer for UK has a sweet little baby hook. Doesn't use it nearly enough.

ETA: As for my theory, coaches just don't teach that kind of shot anymore. I also think it's a basketball IQ issue in terms of when to use that kind of shot and kids have been taught to go for flashy/strong vs. finesse.

Hook shots, to the average fan, aren't as "pretty" on the AAU highlight reel.

watch the euro leagues, breh

don't see many sky hooks anymore but there are some variations of the 'hook shot'

storm warren from lsu has a nice left shoulder jump hook he goes to on the block. the kid from kentucky belle is talking about also.

marc gasol has a decent hook shot. yao was pretty good.

a hook shot would never make the highlights. only dunks & acrobatic shots are featured. so kids think that's all they should work on.

This is a REALLY good question. I was our center in HS and I was only 6"5 so my coach made me work on my baby hook non-stop. It is one of 3 moves I used in the post and it was pretty unstoppable. I know why guys don't use a skyhook but the baby hook should be used.....it would be unstoppable.

I was thinking about the jump hook while playing 2K12. When I can use it, I do, because it's indefensible. I busted out the Dream Shake on Brook Lopez and made that boy look like a fool.

I think it all depends on how accurate your use of it is too. I played with a chick in high school who used a baby hook as a center and she had the worst damn aim on the planet. But she was determined to use it.
