What is kind of funny is that I feel like this notion is disregarded heavily whenever the question of coaching comes up. Over and over again you see good times firing good coaches because they "don't win the championship" and end up in a much worse situation. And still you have other fanbases clammoring to fire the coach (like LSU). A couple of examples:
- Michigan Wolverines football, nowhere near where they were when they got rid of Lloyd Carr
- Arkansas Razorbacks with Nutt have not gotten back to where they were when he was a coach
- LSU basketball with John Brady. have not gotten back to where they were either.
- Texas Tech football fires Mike Leach and hasn't gotten back to the level where they were
- New York Rangers fired Tom Renney for equal performance out of Tortorella, who had better talent
- Washington Capitals with Bruce Boudreau. Dude is doing well in Anaheim right now.
- Toronto Maple Leafs really shouldn't have forced Punch Imlach out, they have basically sucked since '69 with a few good years with Wendel and Gilmour around.

I can't stand any fan base that is extremely proficient on the field yet they act like there is a chip on their shoulder or that nobody believes in them.
Based on my interaction with some Seahawks fans last year, most of them said that nobody was picking them or that they were disrespected by the talking heads on ESPN and NFL Network.
From what I remember last year, this team from the get go was projected to be a number one seed and be in the Super Bowl. I didn't get any impression that they were disrespected or that "nobody believed in them".
This was immensely annoying throughout the season. Good call.

Kind of, yeah. I'm immediately suspicious of anyone who is a fan of a big bandwagon team. Maybe their fandom is genuine, but they are probably someone who just latched on when they got good and is now trying to validate themselves as a person through someone else's success, which is just odd to me.
A fan of a crappy team, Cubs excepted as they are a bandwagon in a different way, is likely a longtime fan of the team who cares deeply and passionately about them. It's not like he's the reason they stink -- he's not out there shooting baskets or missing tackles.
Being a fan is about pain. Most of the time, your team doesn't win the title. It almost always ends badly. It's what makes you appreciate it when your team finally does win.
I think the ultra historical teams- Lakers, Yankees, Packers - aren't necessarily immune to bandwagon fans, but being a fan of them is sort of understandable and easy. This doesn't make them fake, just...obvious? Maybe that's the better word. I can probably take them seriously, but like the Cubs, it's more about the culture of the history and the importance of the team. And I think sometimes they can actually be real fans, eventually.
I think there are really two types that are hard to take seriously, the ultra successful over a short period (compared to the above) of time: Duke, Heat, Red Sox and blind devotion fans: the Cowboys and Bama.

That's seriously a joke. I didn't think people like this existed...except with chicks and internet fables.
All fans have good with the bad...for me growing up L.A. - USC/Lakers and Dodgers/Raiders...
The Raiders and Dodgers have given me more than enough pain since the 80's. Thank god USC and the Lakers came back around last decade.

They're are more fake wannabe Yankees and Red Sox fans than Cubs fans. Just walk around any city and you'll see flatbill hats of these teams

uLL fans wearing BAMA gear.

Happened to LSU when we helped Mack Pack. Fired a guy for going 8-3 every year, only to find out going 8-3 every year IS what success looks like. A&M had the same thing happen to them when they fired RC Slocumb. Went from B-level success (successful, but not a nationa ltitle contender) to the dregs. But a lot of that is not the firing, it's the hire (McClendon had been at LSU a long time and it was probably time to move on, just not to hire the string of substitute teachers eventually ended up in Curley... I know, Bo Rein's plane crash)
And since you brought up the NHL, there was an interesting article recently showing that in the Expansion Era (post-1967), few guys win a title at their first head coaching job and except for Scotty Bowman, never win a Cup at a second team after winning one. It's actually best to hire a guy who was successful but fell just short at his lost job.

It's clear your fandom is based on geography, as is most people's, but I view any Lakers fans not from LA with skepticism. Hell, even Lakers fans from LA and Yankees fans from NY start behind the 8-ball with me... you could've rooted for the Clippers or the Mets.
I at least get it, and winning is fun. But if you root for the Yankees and not the Knicks, you're a poseur and someone should punch you in the taint (unless you literally don't watch basketball, then sub in the Rangers).

Well, to be fair, when I was growing up, the Mets were the better team in the greater NY area. Plus they had a dude named Mookie and another dude named Strawberry and to a 7 year old that is hilarious.
Let's hope for your sake that Leonsis doesn't misspell Trotz and hires Torts.

Cowboys fans
At least the one who brag about the five championships and couldn't pick Tom Landry if I posted pictures of 5 NFL coaches from the 60s and 70s.
Or they think Tom Landry is some guy from Pierre Part.

Nah, just figured i'd have a bit of fun. I'm not into the whole "OH MY GOD MY TEAM IS SO MUCH BETTER THAN YOU AND YOUR TRASHY FAN BASE, frick YOU! RAH RAH RAH" I'm much more subdued than that.

penguins hockey
hell in soccer he pulls for the dam foreign team in the world cup that is in finals every year
When I lived in L.A. I had good friend that was originally from North Carolina and I swear to god his favorite teams were:
Yankees
Cowboys
Lakers
Notre Dame Football
Duke AND North Carolina for CBB- when they played he would wear the jersey of the home team and cheer for them
It was the most ridiculous shite I have even seen. He was older, he is probably 50 now, and said those were the only teams they showed on TV when he was a kid which may be true but come on!
