I feel like Ohio State is the biggest head scratcher for me. I know they're semester based now but only for about 5 years or so. Before that, what did the stadium look like for the first month of football if there were no students on campus? If I'm not mistaken they don't start until late September with a quarter system correct? I know when LSU played Oregon in 2011 they weren't in school yet and thus couldn't bring a band to the game. I've always just found it a bit interesting how certain schools who haven't actually started yet are playing football and wanted to know some thoughts from any of you who might've experienced this while in college.

I think our quarters started mid September. It really only impacted the first 2 or 3 games. The school used those games for a lot of the alumni ticket ticket raffle. If I recall correctly you could still get student tickets for the games as well.

The summer between freshman and sophomore year I returned back to my home but after that I lived on campus year round, a lot of people do. OSU is in the middle of Columbus, not exactly hurting for a population to attend a game.

ETA: The biggest advantage for the team I believe was they did not have to adhere to the 20 hour requirement like when classes are going, so they could be more or less professional football players for the first few weeks of the season and devote 24/7 to it.

Most of the West Coast schools are on quarters and start in late September. Think only like USC and Berkeley are semesters.

It also can end up impacting college basketball since those schools are taking finals right around the tournament.

Don’t those schools get unlimited practice time in the beginning of the season? I seem to remember that being a big topic when we played Oregon

When I was a freshman, I invited some of my friends who were Auburn bound to come down and hang out in Tuscaloosa because they didn't start classes until September 20th or later and they weren't moving or driving down to AU for games.

Their student section was usually pretty open for the first 2-3 games. I don't remember for sure, but it seems like they didn't have a band for those games either, though.

I think they finally went to semesters in 2000.
