It's not that slow. You stand at the apex of the put an feel how much slope it has. You stand behind the ball and however many degrees there is of slope you hold that many fingers out and that's your line.

I took a class on aim point about five years ago from the guy that invented the theory. He sat there with a straight face and told me that grain has absolutely zero effect on the ball on any putt shorter than 25 feet.

I do think some players put too much stock into grain. Speed is the main thing I'm worried about with grain.
