I sometimes hear people talking about how good basketball used to be and how those guys could play today...
Their offenses are very simplistic, as is the defense, and the players are nowhere near as good. Not even close.
And this is the Celtics and Lakers.
Yeah, that is why it pisses me off to hear Jordan say the guys today couldn't hang. The league in general has made such an athletic stride that it is closer to the other way around. A lot of the average NBA guys back then couldn't hang today. Defense was a joke until the Pistons back in the 80s.

I have come to the same conclusion when watching old NBA and college games.
I watched the Michigan St. (Magic) versus Indiana St. (Bird) national championship game, and was completely disappointed. Indiana St. ran a 2-3 zone defense, and all Michigan St. did was pass it a couple times and jack up a shot. I have heard it called the "greatest college basketball game ever played." It was pretty weak.
Offenses back then were very simple. There was little movement away from the ball and hardly any ball screens or screens away from the ball like curls, ups, backs, etc...
Defenses were even worse. Their defensive stances were typically terrible. They stood straight up on defense. Also, their man to man defense was very weak regarding helpside d. The rotations were slow.
Offenses and defenses nowadays are definitely way more complex than the 80's.
I agree with you, but my dad would probably argue against me for hours.

Let's just all hop in the time machine and solve the debate... everyone abandon the thread, let's go.

I dont get the argument. How is being in a simplistic basketball era a knock on the players? Or is the argument spoelstra > all?

I don't think it's a knock on the players at all... I think if you put the 80s lakers/celtics in modern times they'd dominate.... give them exceptional statistical analysis, advanced weight training/conditioning, more sound and fundamental team defense, etc...
that doesn't change the fact that the teams of 30 years ago likely couldn't hang with teams of today.

Who the hell ever said this? You are just making stuff up. It might have been the most important college basketball game ever played, but I have never heard somebody say it was the greatest game.

Whatever. A quick search shows:
- Fox sports calls the game the #5 moment in ncaa history
- USA Today has it as the #23 game in tournament history
- It was the most college basketball game ever when it was played.
- ESPN the Magazine lists it as the #2 greatest ncaa tournament championship game ever.
Maybe I should have called it the most important college basketball game ever played. Either way, I watched the game and thought it was a poor game. Offensive and defensive strategy was weak. I was less than impressed with the fundamentals by all the players as well.

If you think pick and roll and Iso is an improvement or tougher than Lakers/Celts 80's - then you have no feel for the game...watch a ground level pov of Showtime and you tell me who stops it today...watch Bird moving and bullying and the passing.
