Warren Moon, the first African-American quarterback to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, told CBSSports.com that he believes some of the criticism of Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is based in racism.

"A lot of the criticism he's receiving is unfortunate and racially based," Moon, who is Newton's adviser, told the website. "I thought we were all past this. I don't see other quarterbacks in the draft being criticized by the media or fans about their smile or called a phony. He's being held to different standards from white quarterbacks. I thought we were past all this stuff about African-American quarterbacks, but I guess we're not.

"Of course there is racism in every walk of society. We've made a lot of progress in this country. But racism is still there. I just thought in the sports arena we were beyond it. I think the way Cam is being treated shows we're not.

He also pointed out that Sam Bradford came out of a spread offense with Oklahoma similar to the offense Newton ran at Auburn, but there didn't seem to be questions whether Bradford could run a pro-style offense once he was drafted.

"Some of these questions about Cam are more about his intellect. It's blatant racism, some of it," Moon told the website.

I'm sorry Warren Moon but every time I hear you're name I just think of how your Oilers blew a 35-3 lead against the Bills with around 8 min left in the 3rd quarter.

Why do people foolishly say that Bradford came out of a spread offense? That offense had a shitload of different sets - including many that had him coming out of the power i.

Those Oklahoma offenses were among the most diverse in college football in the last 30 years.

But to deal with the topic at hand, Moon needs to shut his fricking mouth. Newton is by far the most overrated player in this draft and will crash and burn like no other.

The fact that a former NFL QB can't tell the differences btw Cams offense and Bradfords is sad.

I'm pretty sure that Bradford NEVER had a zone option read play called while he was the starter at Oklahoma. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty confident in my assertion.

I think about the time he beat his wife for spending too much of his money. He then threw her black arse to the curb and got himself a white woman

Wait, really? He is one of the most athletic QB's to ever play and he is going to flop like Ryan Leaf? You may not like the guy but it is hard to argue his physical abilities.

This is absolutely pathetic that he would even try and compare the two.

Good for Warren. He is entitled to his opinion, just like the rest of you.

I wanted LSU to beat the living crap out of Cam and Auburn, believed his dad wanted pay for play and that he was on board with the whole thing, and could care less if he is a good pro or not.

I will say as an African American that there is some truth to what Moon is saying, regardless of whether he beat his wife or not. He lived it and would know it a lot better than those of you saying he played the race card.

As an African American I will say that there isn't truth to what Moon is saying.

All criticisms that have been leveled at Newton, by the professionals, are legit concerns. White or Black when u get to this level people are going to give negatives about you when evaluating.

It would be as ridiculous to ignore the issues that Cam has as it is to ignore the problems a QB like Mallet has which have gotten plenty of attention.

Boy that Vince Young sure turned out to be one awesome QB!!!!! His athletic ability was just amazing!!!! When the Titans gave him the starting job a few years ago, he held on to that job year after year because he wouldn't throw interceptions or cry anytime things didn't go his way.

Newton will be trash in the NFL.

Athleticism means NOTHING when it comes to NFL QB's.

FWIW, Warren Moon works for Cam. So I wouldn't hold his criticism of critics too highly.

if all you're bringing is athleticism, then yeah, you probably won't do well. but if a guy combines that athleticism with hard work, it definitely matters.

if Cam puts in the work, I think he can be something special.
