People wanted Tiger DQ'd at The Masters a few years ago after the phone in rule violation.

Serious golf fans can be a weird bunch.

The solutions are simple:

1. Change the rule if you need to.
2. Don't create situations where a putt that should stop within five feet of the hole rolls forty feet away and off the green.

The USGA is clearly trying to make this a talking point so no one mentions the horrible course

Phil ran and knowingly hit a moving golf ball

He completely broke the spirit of the rule. People are being way over sanctimonious, but he did a shitty thing that he shouldn’t have done.

Phil basically pulled off the Hack-a-Shaq in golf.

But when he said he did it to save strokes he lost me

That's the part that Strange could have really busted him on. Correct me if I am off base, but couldn't he have taken an unplayable, then two putted (not saying that's a given but theoretically) and gotten out with an an 8?

How could Phil have gotten an "unplayable" there? Why was the ball unplayable?

Im definitely not a rules guru but I believe you can declare any ball unplayable under penalty of one shot and a drop within two club lengths of where you hit the previous shot.

I have never heard that and do not think that’s accurate at all. Especially if u miss hit a ball and end up in a bad location that is hard to hit but playable essentially. People would be dropping all day with one stoke penalties to take the easier way out rather than the seemingly tough shot. Bunkers edge for example which is damn near impossible.

You have to scroll down a bit to see it but it's there. You can deem it unplayable anywhere but a water hazard.

That's exactly what they're doing when a ball plugs in a bunker. The player deems it unplayable.

I’m not upset about it, I like Phil. But one does have to ask........Would Arnold do that? Would Jack or Ben do that? That’s why people are so upset.

Phil says F the USGA and their stupid courses

Smart move by Phil. Mock the USGA while staying within the rules and saying very little. Its easy to take the Ian Poulter route and blast them on Twitter, but Phil made a major statement without speaking. Maybe, just maybe the fricktards at the USGA will get it right next year.

I didn't see it and only saw a story on ESPN.com. I would have thought he killed someone on the course after reading that story. Then I watched the video and didn't think it was that big of a deal. He was 15 strokes back, playing terribly and got frustrated. Who cares.
