USC could field a very good defense and they will benefit from scheme (never was really in favor that tampa 2 in the pac - 12). If you regress on rush defense, it could offset the progression in pass defense. I know that I've heard Trojan fans excited about a little more press coverage, I am just wondering if that is going to pay dividends with smallish cbs?

The AP started in 1936...the Coaches Poll in 1950.
Since the two came to co-exist, there have been 11 split-titles (1954, 1957, 1965, 1970, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1990, 1991, 1997, 2003)
15 if you count the FWAA and NFF.

No that's when he was caught. He was illegal every game he played for them, since well, he shouldn't have been playing. Nice try though.

Any team with a good offensive line should rush for about 900 yards against SC's front four. I'm a huge proponent of line play, and SC's weakness is on the lines. That will bite you on the arse. Every top 25 team has good skill players -- great teams have great linemen. The SC national title teams had near NFL quality lines.

A bit much hyperbole, don't you think? Uko is a top shelf DT and Horton has been around. The dline isn't going to be bad. In fact, it should be above average.

Their oline is great.

these are titles any fan (if they were being honest) should sort of hide and not trumpet.
Know why Bama helmets show 14 on posters and like the one on TV sets?
I know the 73 UPI title was before the bowls. their 64 and 65 titles are similar and then they have the audacity to claim they jobbed in 66 and 77.
But those aren't as bad as claiming 1941 when they finished 20th in the AP and the 4 titles before the polls even started.

I just regret that the BCS seemed to put sole emphasis on the BCS title when before (since winning the NC was often out of your hands (like it sometimes still is today) it was simply icing on the cake after the goal of winning your conference.
That's easy for a USC fan to say. You are less likely to on the outside looking in. While the 2003 AP title is legit, its very possible that the only reason USC was ranked ahead of LSU was because USC lost 2 weeks earlier. That is how the polls always worked.
I do agree that its a shame more people do view winning a conference as an accomplishment. Many have belittled LSU for giving out rings and hanging a banner for the 2011 SEC title. I've said before I would rather a 4 team playoff be only conference winners. but if they are going to have rankings and post season play and name a national champ, better to have that champ named from winning a game where both participants are playing for the title.

It had been so long since LSU won a NC and the fans wanted to revel in the accolades and thought the split took away some of the glory. So the hatred stems from memory.
The hatred, even then was misplaced. It was not USC's fault. I remember a pic of USC fans wearing a sugar bag and with posters saying 'pour some sugar on me" during the OSU game.

It's the absolute cornerstone of winning a title - especially the last 10 years.
Hell, USC's offense got all the attention during the PC years but they had some great D-lines and fantastic linebackers.
Simply put, you have to control the LOS to win over the long-haul of a season. Your skill players are going to have off days and you can't simply hope to outscore everyone.

Obviously. 900 yards would be a record.

SPN is saying that USC is back. Where did they go? IMO, they've been the same overrated, mediocre, offensively small/fast, defensively weak team for a few years now. The AP's love affair with USC is nauseating. However, 5 of the top 10 teams are SEC!
I love how you dumbasses just eat it up. ESPN gives the coverage because people like you watch just to get yourselves pissed off.
And I really don't understand the jealousy. USC is fricking good. I would trade LSU's recruiting class with theirs in a heartbeat this year.
Oh, and USC seemed to whip some SEC arse back in the 2000s. (Ask Arky and Auburn)
and this is from an LSU fan. I'm just tired of the same old SECtards saying USC is overrated when they clearly have NEVER disappointed in a major bowl game. (see UGA, LSU, and Bama for that)

Correction. Many have belittled LSU for putting "WE'RE #2!" on those rings.

well, that's fair game I suppose, but I'm pretty sure that was put there for motivation, not bragging. However, the long snapper, Tinker was mocking the SEC title on twitter. Bama fans were mocking the banner we put up, saying they don't put up SEC title flags blah, blah, blah.

I sort of mean the over-emphasis, as if that was all that mattered in a season...winning the BCS title...and rivalries and conferences take a backseat.
It just seems, with the older polls (compared with this constant weekly BCS ranking update) that there wasn't this overriding season-long emphasis on playing for the title...because there wasn't this quasi-roadmap of how to win the title...except, hell we sort of have to probably win out and win our conference...so the emphasis was on that.
You played to win your conference, go to a bowl and win and if the voters put you #1 - well that was awesome. It just seems with a system, the game of college football gets swallowed up in just thinking about the end goal of that system...while we forget to enjoy all the other things we used to care so much about.

Without reading through this thread, I'm going to guess there a bunch of whiny LSU fans who are still talking about 03
and
A bunch of SEC douches saying no one should even be allowed to sit across the same football field from a team wearing an SEC patch on their jersey

We have always been athletic at CB. The problem was we burned them out (and injured them) practicing against some of the best WRs of their respective time.
More importantly we gave our an opponent the ability to dump a 5-yard slant on us when we had a lead in the 3rd Quarter. Guess what? Being a QB is a lot about rhythm. Letting someone sit there and pick you apart will lead to great throws.
Our rush D will be fine this year. Actually very good. I am not worried about it at all. We will be quick up front, and Leonard Williams will be all an All-PAC 12 and All-American Freshman.
I am concerned about our rush from the edges on passing downs. I don't see it as initially being strong. Hopefully that will change. It is the biggest concern Trojan fans should have right now.
That is my only worry on defense.

Believe me when I say we will be fine in run D. Pass rush is the concern.

I agree there, winning an SEC title shouldn't be mocked. Y'all should put a banner up.
The #2 thing on the ring just stuck out to me because FSU has always put dumb shite on their rings (especially "STATE CHAMPS!" when they beat us and Miami in the same year).

I don't think USC is bad at defense, and they could handle the SEC but they're "above average" in the SEC. Instead of "excellent" in the PAC/B1G/B12.

All Pac-12 this year??? C'mon, man, that is a lot of expectation for a true frosh on the dline. Armstead has been throwing olinemen around like rag dolls but I would never expect that much out of a true frosh. I just hope for meaningful snaps.
