Japans championships were before USA got involved. If I'm not mistaken USA won last year over Japan in USAs first season. Apparently they repeated this season. Thanks to the O.P. as I didn't know this yet.

If American Samoa competed as a separate country, they could put up a strong team, especially in the trenches.
