University of Chicago,
UChicago is private. I think the question was any public university. Maybe I just misread the question...
ETA: I did mis read it. Sorry ...

Seems D II would be sufficient. Too bad, espescially for baseball who was in the tourny in 2008.
DIII is non-scholarship...

UNO went to the College World Series in 1984.
They always put a representative basketball team on the court. Some years they were really, REALLY good, and a few years bad. But they normally had winning records. They had enough success in basketball in the late 1970s and early 1980s with Wayne Cooper, then Ronnie Grandison that they would fill that old gym (now the Health and P.E. Center.) They would pack it, and it'd get loud, becoming known as the "Chamber of Horrors."
This lead the university to build the Senator Nat. Keiffer UNO Lakefront Arena, which opened in 1983, thinking that a larger arena would draw more fans. At the time, New Orleans needed this medium sized venue, as well. It's a great building for concerts.
Despite some REALLY competitive basketball teams through the 80s and early 90s and a number of NCAA Tournament appearances, they had trouble pulling more people into the Arena for games than used to go to the CoH. Now the occasional La Tech game for American South supremacy or a visit from Memphis State would help pull in upwards of 3,000, they never could capture the city. Plus, when Tulane came back from basketball exile, they stayed in Fogelman and built an atmosphere that UNO couldn't recapture.
It's sad. They had some decent baseball teams over the years, as well.

I think you could make a argument for ULL, La Tech and LSU to be the only three public D-I schools in the state.
1 or 1-A? It's true though, LA has way too many colleges.

If they go D-III I hope they elevate their club football team

UNO is part of the LSU system and not part of the University of Louisiana system.

Do not think that anybody has said otherwise

Neither ULL nor Latech are remotely close to being self-sufficient athletically. Each uses ~$5-6 million annually (around half of their respective athletic budgets) of "direct institutional support". That's taxpayer subsidy. This should be ended, they should given freedom to raise funds through other means (student fees, TAF-like organizations, etc.) and let the market determine the level at which they play.
If left to that, LSU would be the only Div. 1 state school, which is what should be.

...UNO is part of "The LSU System" , and is run by the LSU Board.
.. The University Seal on their gear says:
Louisiana State University System - The University of New Orleans
from Wikipedia:
The University of New Orleans, often locally called UNO, is a medium sized public urban university located in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. It is a member of the LSU System and the Urban 13 and is currently headed by Chancellor Timothy P. Ryan.

Does any other university, with a major metropolitan city in it's name play Div III sports?
Birmingham Southern dropped from D1 to D3 a couple of years ago. D3 is not great but in baseball its not much different as far as talent than D2 or Juco. Baseball is different in that part but football and basketball its a huge drop off.

i'm pretty sure that was part of the plan. apparently club football took in more money than any of their official sports.

Yeah, and none of them are self-sufficient academically. I think that they should just kill all state support of state operated academic institutions. You know, let the market decide whether people want to pay $30K a year to go to LSU for undergrad instead of around that much to go to any number of private schools with better academic reputations.
P.S. - You're a moron.

It looks like CCNY does. CUNY has its own athletic conference.
I think Centenary in Shreveport is dropping from D1 to DIII. It is a very small private school.

NYU plays Div 3 basketball.
