no formal NIL offers

Is lawyer speak for someone/somewhere offered something verbally that didn't have the means to back it up and the player and his family got pissed that didn't come through.

Well holy shite. Wouldn't have been as shocked if this was happening to a team that the wheels were already falling off on their season, but 3-0 with legit playoff hopes

Wonder if it was lack of playing time or if there's alleged unfulfilled NIL promises here too? Transferred from NC State for his senior year. He doesn't even show up on the 3-deep depth charts and his carries have dropped from 10 to 8 to 1 in the 3 games.

I actually hope this happens more frequently.

When players who aren’t getting enough PT start bailing after 3 games all across the country, a reckoning will come.

Either make these kids sign contracts and give up amateur status…college football becoming a semi-pro league…or find a way to remove ‘pay for play’ and these ‘collectives’ from the NIL structure and police them as much as shady bag men back in the day. Make NIL exactly what it says…selling your name/image/likeness.

Although, it’s a pipe dream. College football is dead.

“When I had the conversation with the offensive assistant who was doing Matt’s recruitment, we talked about a number north of $100,000 to $150,000,” Cromartie said. “This was a number that I was told would be given to Matt to come there.”

When Sluka still did not have a deal midway through training camp, according to Cromartie, he reached back out to UNLV to reopen negotiations.

“I reached out to the coaches halfway through camp,” he said. “I reached out politely, ‘Hey, I understand you guys are midway through camp. It’s a quarterback competition, but the NIL agreement hasn’t been sent out. Can we speak on this?’

“Nothing was said back for a couple of weeks ago. I approached them again. I said, ‘Hey, you know what’s going on?’ I even offered to meet them halfway. I said, ‘I understand that trying to get $100,000 within the next four months may be hard, but can we get him $10,000 a month?’ They said, ‘No.’ I said, ‘How about $5,000?’ They came back with, ‘We can give them $3,000 a month for the next four months. Take it or leave it.'”

UNLV claims he got everything he was told he would get, then suddenly a little success, and he wanted to renegotiate.

And the other turd who quit, was 4th string rb, he didnt want to work hard to rise up the charts, he wants spots handed to him

Rodger Sherman
@rodger
So UNLV committed to the Mountain Weat last week but is reconsidering and might go PAC-12 because Utah State changed their mind, also the two leagues are suing each other.

Obviously the problem with college football is players making rash, selfish decisions based on money

and he wanted to renegotiate.

Maybe there was no renegotiation with UNLV… maybe the rules for redshirting after three games need to be amended to make sure players must only play in the fourth quarter in defined “garbage time”, such as a game must not be within 16 points (two scores) at any time in the fourth quarter ahead or behind

That way redshirting is only available to developmental players who are not integral to any game plan in a significant way (you won’t see them if a game is remotely in doubt)

From this article, sounds like he wants money to continue playing…. Let’s be honest, how much is a holy cross QB worth?

He had them in the playoffs multiple years and holds a bunch of records. He had a great career. He's also played good this year and has thrown 6tds, to go along with impressive rushing numbers.

I can't believe that a starting QB at a major college program would only get 3k in NIL. If UNLV is reporting and defending that, then I really don't blame the guy for leaving. I mean, how much did Swann get in NIL to transfer to LSU, as a backup? I bet it was way more than 3K..

How many UNLV football supporters do you think are willing to give money for football players via NIL?

Absolutely should have played his last down for college football.

This is a proper summation of the UNLV PR perspective. Doesn't seem to be much debate around that though. The debate is much deeper than that.

My heart wants to agree with this, but my brain says, if this kid was assured of some payment arrangement and he's not getting it, then he almost has to leave. Take a year, get a deal in writing at a new school and go from there. It may also be his only way to force the NIL people to pay up. This all assumes his side is the truth.

With his stats he’d have trouble playing for our Holy Cross
