Then it morphed into a bunch of athletes that went to school not to learn but to further their athletic pursuits …yet people became obsessed over some strange tribal loyalty to the institution and not really the players.

You left out the part that most of the obsessed people didn't attend said schools.

I was replying to his comment asking if Pro athletes who hold out and don’t play, despite having a contract, lack character.

Yes. They do. Anyone who doesn’t honor their word (and especially a signed legally binding document) lacks integrity and character.

Honor is worth more than money. I know our society says differently, but we’d all be in a better place if people honored their commitments and didn’t always have their mentality be ‘I’m gonna get mine’.

His agent and dad said UNLV didn't honor supposed verbal promises. Why would he transfer there before getting anything on paper?

Sounds like they're just going on spoken promises, not contracts.

He probably could handle it better, but athletes are now employees and if they aren’t getting what’s owed what else are they going to do.

He is contract labor which you can assume means there is a contract in place. Way too little info to cast blame without knowing details of that contract. i do know if I am the NIL funding group, 90% of that money is going into escrow under a draw disbursement funding arrangement.

Hopefully this is an impetus for more structured requirements for agents like all the pro sports leagues have. The current situation is a mess. This sounds like a guy that got absolutely horrible advise from a terrible agent.

It's hard to believe the kid would leave a potential playoff team if they were coming close to his payment guarantees.

I tend to side with Sluka

Getting promises of money without an NIL deal in place seems to be a bad idea and also a violation of NCAA rules.

Whitlock has now discussed it, if anyone is curious.

Sounds like he didn't get paid after all.

Now the question is whether or not UNLV coaches really did promise him $100k NIL deal during his recruitment or if Sluka's camp is making that up as an excuse for him to redshirt and transfer because now they think he can cash in next season after UNLV started 3-0

I'm starting to think the story that he was offered a bigger NIL deal by another school to transfer may have been a bullshite bluff by his agent to try to get money out of UNLV. Wouldn't make sense for another school to risk NCAA sanctions for tampering for a QB that's played 3 games at the FBS level and has 318 yards in 3 games and only completing 44% of his passes.

The old system was so much better. Earn your right to make money once you get out of school.

Based on the UNLV’s collective statement, no NIL deal was ever agreed upon during recruiting or during his time at UNLV. So how’d he get that $3,000 stipend to move to LV? Is that not a violation? I’m so confused.

"aside from a completed community engagement event over the summer."

That would make sense as a possible source for the $3k
