Bingo, he’s a rumor guy who doesn’t do real reporting and he’s an ESPN guy, never forget that. From what I understand the UNC people knew it would be Malone mid to late last week and the Donovan story came from outside UNC circles to Goodman. Is that in the ballpark of what you know or heard?

From what Tyler Hansbrough said the Malone thing has been floated and gaining momentum for awhile. He’s been going to practices all year, he’s been making friends with all the decision makers and influencers and that he found out about the hire late last week, before Goodman ran with his Billy Donovan story.

I would have preferred Billy Donovan, but this isn't a bad hire at all. It's certainly not "settling". As many before have said, he specializes in developing the bigs, something UNC is well known for putting into the league.

I did hear folks in Chapel Hill talking about running the athletic department more like a pro organization, so this may fit into that line of thinking.

This is what LSU is doing as well

I think they’re gonna love Malone over there.

Was it from that fraud Lombardi calling them the 33rd pro team?

No. I played golf at UNC for 2 years before I transferred to UGA and am still pretty connected with the deep pocket donors in Chapel Hill. My sources are internal within the AD and heavy hitter donors.

I did NOT want Belicheck and am shocked he's still there.

Current players are going to flee NC after this hire. What a stupid move! What did they say? Let’s hire a 70 year old guy but without the 24 yo girlfriend?

He is 54 years old...six years younger than Billy Donovan.

Yeah, this is the EXACT same stunt Billy pulled on us. No idea who was left on UNC's AD's list, but we had already offered Hurley $12 million and been turned down. At this point Mitch was contacting Scott Drew and Mark Pope. Pitiful. Wait the two damn weeks on Billy. If we ended up with Pope two weeks later, so fricking what?

I know Oats came out saying he was turning us down, but Mitch is so upright I don't believe for a second he ever tried to get him, or Pearl, which makes Mitch a real jackass. I don't love Oats per se, but I'd have been happy with us hiring him. Pearl I believe would be very successful here. Mitch still could hire him. But no, instead we're mired in mediocrity.

For those who aren't aware, Mitch is done and we are getting a new AD this summer. Barring a miracle, Pope is getting canned next off season, because right now it looks like next season is going to be another disaster.

Soooo....if you enjoy the insanity that is a UK basketball coaching hire, stay tuned. Next spring we'll do this all over again. This UNC process has felt mild by comparison. I think they'd have been better served waiting on Billy than hiring this guy, but maybe he'll work out for them.
