It was a standalone game on Labor Day night. Both teams were ranked in the top 12. They both still had a ton of cachet at that point in time.

Those two VA. Tech games were both on Mondays, before the NFL season started.
Boise State was #3 and the game was played at FedEx field in Maryland.
Ohio State was #1 and they played at Lane Stadium.
So, not sure how much VA. Tech played into that rather it was the only game on a Monday night and they played the #1 and #3 teams in the country
