That is about as even as you can get after forty years...
I have no problem admitting UofM has been OSU's personal hand-puppet over the past several years, but it irritates me when people pretend Michigan hasn't done shite since the days of glorified rugby.

I agree. Had Cooper not sucked so bad against UofM, we may have actually gained some ground in the overall series. Sadly, that was not even remotely the case.

No, Michigan was dominant over Ohio State prior to the leather helmet era. Since then, eh, nope.
Ohio State has more national championships, more All Americans, more Heisman Trophy winners and more tradition than those motherfrickering, homosexual assholes up north.
frick Michigan and may they NEVER, EVER fire Dickhead Rodriguez or Bill Martin.
frick YEA
frick michigan
This topic is really interesting. I think a lot of people are thinking of it in terms of wins and losses and national championships. I think some other things need to be taken into account: NFL Hall of Famers (since they are still usually closely tied to their college), All-Americans, Revenue, trophy winners like the Heisman, etc. There's tons of factors.
I think Bama, ND, USC are locks for the top 5. The other contenders are OSU, Michigan, Oklahoma, Nebraska battle out the other spots.

is this the "hey let me start this thread so people will say good things about bama" thread?

You are right; I stad corrected. I mmust have included regluar season games too. APparently, I thought OSU made it to the Rose Bowl much more. They did not.
They've been in quite a few Rose Bowls. In this decade there were 3 they weren't in because they were in the BCSNCG.

The series was 19-3-2 in favor of Michigan in the early days. This is why Ohio State fans refer to the record post pre leather helmet era.

How in the world does anybody have USC ranked ahead of Alabama as a program? Alabama has a higher all-time winning percentage than USC. Alabama also has a better winning percentage in the AP poll era (1936-present). They've played in a tougher conference against better competition. They have more national championships. And in head to head meetings, Alabama is 5-2 against USC. There is literally not a single valid argument for putting USC above Alabama. NONE. Also, Michigan has always been a better program than Ohio State. The last ten years doesn't change 100 years of history.
This is close to the point I made with my lists - the best program discussion however is different from the most prestigious program list
One list was:
1 Alabama
2 Notre Dame (IN)
3 Southern California
4 Oklahoma
5 Michigan
6 Ohio St.
7 Texas
8 Nebraska
9 Louisiana St.
10 Tennessee
11 Georgia
12 Penn St.
That one is based on results on the field
The second list is a subjective one because of the word "prestige". To me that's more like what you get when you ask non-football fans TODAY what the most important football teams are... IMO they would say something like:
1) USC
2) Notre Dame
3) Alabama
4) Ohio State
5) Florida?
Obviously the problem with the second list is it has less to do with who has actually been good and more to do with what fans recognize in a name recognition sense

and that is not even when it was posted prior to editing.

No way, LSU, Tenn, or UGA should be ahead of PSU in terms of prestige or even consistent results on the field

1 point for each net win (total wins minus total losses).
5 points for each perfect season (8 games minimum).
2.5 points for each undefeated (but not perfect) season (8 games minimum).
10 points for each retroactive (pre-1936) national championship (CFRA, HAF, NCF)
50 points for each AP national championship between 1936 and 1949 (pre-coaches' poll)
25 points for each AP national championship from 1950 to date.
25 points for each CP national championship.
5 points for each minor national championship (FWAA, NCF).
5 points for each conference championship.
5 points for each major bowl win (Rose, Sugar, Orange, Fiesta1, Cotton2).
4 points for each major bowl tie.
2 points for each major bowl loss.
3 points for each minor bowl win.
2 points for each minor bowl tie.
1 point for each minor bowl loss.
10 points for each Heisman.
5 points for each other major award (Maxwell, Outland, Lombardi, and AFCA-COY).
2.5 points for each minor award.
1 point for each Walter Camp All American.
5 points for each CFB Hall of Famer.

1 The Fiesta Bowl really hit the big time when it hosted the de facto national championship game between Miami and Penn State after the 1986 season, so the Fiesta Bowl is considered to be a major bowl from that time forward, and a minor bowl prior thereto.
2 The Cotton Bowl ceased to be a major bowl when it was not included in the BCS format which went into effect in the 1998 season. Therefore, the Cotton Bowl is considered to be a major bowl until 1997, and a minor bowl thereafter.
and you get
1. ND 1684
2. USC 1598
3. OU 1545
4. Ohio St 1448
5. Michigan 1445.5
LINK
This is easily the best and most well rounded criteria. But just about every criteria you use you will end up with ND and USC as your top 2

The only thing i would add is some way to factor in opps record, and home vs road.

1. Notre Dame
2. Alabama/USC
3. Army/ Navy
4. Michigan/ Ohio St.
5. Texas/ Oklahoma
6. Penn St./ Nebraska
Army and Navy have a certain prestige about them much like ND. The overall success of Bama and USC place them in the same league. Ohio St. and Michigan are impossible to separate like Bama/ USC. It's the same reason Oklahoma and Texas are grouped because their rivalry makes each other prestigeus.

Hey, somebody that agrees with me! lol I posted Army and Navy like 2 pages ago. Those two schools are the first schools that come to my mind when i think of "prestige".

Yea, it's one of those things were people sometimes forget the great success of the Academys. Those schools are just Tradition rich as it gets but people don't understand what prestigious means I guess. I would like to group them with ND but that's just not true. ND is head and shoulders above anybody in presige and it pains me to say that.
