After finishing 12th at the Open Championship in July, Fleetwood was set to earn $154,000. The money, however, was sent to a different Tom Fleetwood - an American golf teacher who had previously competed in Challenge Tour events in Europe and thus had his information on file with the PGA and the European Tour.

"He got on to his bank immediately and they didn't know what to say," Thorner said, according to The Guardian. "That's when I realized that it must be for the other Tommy Fleetwood and I quickly worked out that it was his Open winnings. At least he can always say he won $150,000 at the Open."

The best part of this story is how the Real Tommy Fleetwood says he doesn't check his bank account and didn't even notice it wasn't there.

Must be nice to have $150,000 not drop in and not even care.

What's the law on this if someone fricks up and sends it to the wrong person? Not by some clerical error but they are actually just a dumbass. Like if that happened and the accidental recipient just told them to pound sand if they wanted it back is there legal ground to get it back?

I mean, is it now a fair question?

If you handed me 10,000 in cash, and then came back the next day and said "Sorry, I gave it to the wrong person" do you still get that back?

No it’s not. “Finders Keepers” is not a sound legal strategy.

For what is in the OP I get it

There is a clear trail

Answer my scenario now

If you handed me 10,000 in cash and the person tells you its yours, you earned it, and then came back the next day and said "Sorry, I gave it to the wrong person" do you still get that back?

Find me a story of this ever happening in the history of ever and I'll play further.

Well until today I would have struggled to find you a story of a random golfer getting wired 150k

There have been numerous instances of people having a bank error, most of which are not caused by similar names.

Just recently the bank teller put the decimal in the wrong place and almost 50 grand was put into my account. Haha. I had serious thoughts about not saying anything but I didn’t want to end up as a news story.

Yes, people have been charged with crimes in situations like this. Worked on a case years back where the bank transposed some numbers on a bank account by mistake. The guy who actually received the money spent all of it and was thereafter arrested.

A) the bank can take it back on their own. They do it all the time.

B) if they mess up and you cashed it out, cooperating is the only thing you should do. If you don't cooperate you can be arrested for theft.

While a student at UGA in 93, my bank deposited $600+ in my account. I didn’t spend it because I feared they would be reconciling it as soon as the person who was supposed to receive it called them asking where his money was. They called me within 3 weeks and said they were transferring it to the correct account. I told them I didn’t understand why it was deposited into my account as it just showed up one day. Told them I was waiting to see if it was a bank error and that the money was not spent so just take your fricking money back.
