But to be honest, I'd like to share the famous anecdote regarding John Kruk:
It was spring training, and John Kruk was significantly overweight.
He was also drinking beer and smoking cigarettes. A woman recognized him, and she approached him. “You should be ashamed of yourself. You’re an athlete,” she said.
Kruk responded, “I ain’t an athlete, lady. I’m a baseball player.”
I seem to recall there was a pause after the word lady punctuated with a drag on the cigarette and the exhale, followed by the rest of the quote.

I don't think it really is. most of our opinion of Ruth revolves around very late images of Ruth and John Goodman's portrayal.
Younger Ruth images
Even Older images are not our typical image
He definitely wasn't svelte, particularly toward the end, but he wasn't the portly anomaly of an athlete we often think of him as.

In all fairness, whenever a debate regarding "better athlete" is ever commenced the OP should specify the definition of "athlete" before the arguing ensues because people'll naturally interpret that term broadly and argue accordingly, I personally don't buy the whole baseball logic being applied as if that's supposed to mean something and settle the argument, doesn't compute for me so

Plenty of high schoolers were "can't miss" prospects who failed. Same for plenty of college prospects as well.

I just don't think it's fair to say because one guy played 2 sports well enough IN HIGH SCHOOL compared to one guy with 1 sport (MJ played 3 at Laney) that somehow he's a better athlete than the 1-sport player and setting the burden of proof at sport quantity, unless that's the criteria for defining who's a superior athlete. I can't ride with that unless that's the universally-accepted standard, appears very arbitrary and meticulously slanted in favor of a certain someone in the debate.

With all due respect, I cannot accept the argument that because Brady was better in high school at the only sport we can compare the two at that somehow makes him the better all-around athlete unless this is a quantity game relative to high school sports. If the quantity game for high school sports was your intent, then yes I'd agree but let's not minimize MJ both are legends of life and sports.

John Elway, Danny Ainge, Dan Marino and Darrell Green are better than both those guys: Elway was drafted no. 1 overall in the NFL draft and in the 2nd round in the 1981 MLB draft by the New York Yankees and effectively used his relationship with the Yankees as leverage to persuade the Baltimore Colts to trade his draft rights, Ainge was drafted by both the NBA and MLB and actually played for the Blue Jays during his college career, Marino was drafted high by the Kansas City Royals coming out of high school, etc etc
