So Gary played pretty much his entire career with Jack and Arnold. Ernie played in early 90's which was considered golfs down time as far as talent. But Player wouldn't be better than Ernie. Dude just stop.
look at this stellar field he beat in the 1959 british. impressive.

I don't recall the Mickleson's, Sing's, Duval's, El's et al ever stepping up so strongly to challenge Tiger like that in a major. Guys like Dimarco, Scott May and the like made Tiger sweat it, but telling to me the best of his peers never did like the best of Jack's did.
doesn't matter who pushed tiger in majors. bob may shot 66-66 on the weekend to force a playoff at the 2000 PGA. a bunch of players in the field have the ability to get hot and win a major. so many more players can win now than in jack's day.

So many more players can win now than could in Tigers day.
I hope he wins again. I really do. It is better for golf and him chasing Jack is still one of the most, if not the most, compelling sports story going today.
If he did get on a run after all of the personal and physical shite he's gone through it would be the best story.

the other thing about today's game - so many more players are trying to play professional golf because of the money. back then, many really good players didn't try the tour because of the low purses. and some tried once or twice and gave up quickly to get a real job. today you have guys trying for 15 years to make it.
best example of this is edward white. Won NCAA's, shot 61-64-65-62 in UT qualifying, in the Texas golf Hall of Fame and never tried to play pro golf. better money as an engineer.

Why not? But it looks like it doesn't matter now since he hasn't won one since 08.

You were you around during Jacks days? If not then you are way off base here.

Really? Even in the golf world?

66-66 on the weekend of a major to force a playoff is incredible no matter what your name is.

so you are saying the fields were deeper in jack's day? do you realize that some of the best players in the world never played in the british open in jack's day? do you realize how many more professional golfers there are today versus in the 60's?

You list his first major when I said pretty much entire career. Good job.

Will TMB accept my proposal?

Tiger is old, he's continuously injured and there are a shitload of young golfers who are just better than him.
Tiger will diverge further away from good golf play.

And was still player of the year last year. Why didn't any of these great young golfers win player of the year? Thought they were better than tiger?

I wasn't around then. And I doubt you were either. I am not defending Jack in any way. But you are overboard with your Tiger bias.

If tiger never wins another torney, i still envy his awesome life. Minus the crazy wife shite.
Posted on 6/28/14 at 1:08 pm to MusicMaster
I was. Jack faced stiffer competition, eg, Miller, Weiskoff, Irwin, Trevino, Floyd, Casper, Player, Palmer, etc.
Posted on 6/28/14 at 1:20 pm to COTiger
You can argue jack's era was more top heavy, but today's fields are much deeper making it more difficult to win today.
