The course is going to have a bitch of a time accommodating this group - they were having trouble before the announcement with real estate for fans.

Merion East is VERY compact...not a lot of room between holes for galleries so the USGA limited the areas for fans primarily to massive bleachers. The crowds for a normal US Open are big enough, the one with this group wouldn't be possible on a normal lay out with the gallery movement.

In normal events, the groupings are randomized by category, so it would be unlikely.
And this isn't unprecedented. The USGA had grouped 1, 2, and 3 in the world before.
Also, of note, the players will be going off #1 and #11. My guess is because of the proximity to the clubhouse of #11.

Yea, they also prepped two holes at Merion West in the event that 11 and 12 are flooded.
I think Webb Park has more acreage than Merion East...
