It’s interesting that three of the biggest contrarians on the board are fiercely defending soccer. Easy target I guess.

Soccer doesn’t need anyone to defend it. If you don’t like it, that’s fine, but it doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with it. It just means it doesn’t appeal to you, which is perfectly fine. It’s just annoying every four years when these threads pop up and people who never watch or understand soccer post the same stupid comments over and over again.

The contrarians would be the ones who think a game that is established throughout the world needs to change, no?

People criticize rules in all sports all the time. I like regular football but there are plenty of dumb rules.

People fiercely defending this tie thing being a wonderful part of soccer is a weird hill to die on.

But if you enjoyed watching those 2 0-0 ties today more power to you. Wish I could be entertained by that.

Wut? A consistent criticism of soccer in america is ties and flopping. If they want to grow more here addressing that would help.

It's made amazing progress regardless. There is less need for a national league to be 'elite' than there is just for it to exist.

quote:

The main reason it is popular is because of accessibility.

The main reason it is popular is due to the UK's cultural influence, where the sport was spread by working class sailors and expats. That coincided with the development of national leagues and the development of modern cities, where soccer clubs often were extensions of the identity of neighborhoods.

In contrast, the British Empire exported its 'upper-class' sports to its settler colonies, which is why you see cricket being popular in South Asia and Rugby being popular in Australia and South Africa. And cricket itself undermines the 'accessibility' argument, as cricket is popular and has been popular in one of the poorest regions of the world, South Asia, throughout the 20th century, and the barriers to entry for it were far greater than soccer.

But I am man enough to admit soccer is a better and much simpler sport. The amount of rules and illogical inconsistencies in the rules of football is kinda a joke

Say they went to PKs after full time today in the draw games, that some how makes regular time more enjoyable for you?

But there are far more aspects of a '0-0' game to enjoy than just the score. You can have fantastic 0-0 matches and terrible 0-0 matches. I personally thought the Mexico-Poland game was entertaining, but I also watched it. Writing off a game by virtue of the score being scoreless is a weird way of talking about a sport.

I mean, not really. The fundamental principles of each game remain the same, as each rely on field position (i.e. what part of the field you get the ball back) and turnovers. There are plenty of tactical nuances too, as well as patterns of play that you see develop if you know a coach well enough.

Yes

Or do like hockey where you get partial credit for a shootout loss

But I would just prefer a sudden death OT period.

You get this bullshite when it's necessary. It isn't necessary in group. The world cup is fine without your crying.

There's one thing that drives me crazy about soccer and its not ties:

Its time.

It makes no fricking sense whatsoever and is so frustratingly stupid and arbitrary.

You mean to tell me you have these complicated computers that can reconstruct an Offside...but can't just hit pause on a clock?

No, let's just let it run instead for no reason while a guy is flopping around on the ground like a dying fish for getting bumped, and then add an arbitrary amount of time on at the end that really isn't representative of the exact time at all, that could decide the biggest matches in the world.

Makes total sense.

The contrarians are the ones who argue for pages about everything - you, pride and lnchbox.

For the record I enjoy watching and playing soccer. I was just saying I think the actual rules of the game are not difficult to comprehend compared to football.

You called it a simpler sport… which it is … doesn’t take too long to understand what’s going on

Yes, especially if you didn't watch it. Not every scoreless game is boring.

Are you not right here with us? Why is the village idiot Cosmo not included, just because you agree with him?
