With NFL ratings in decline, the bidding process for next season’s Thursday Night Football package provides an instructive look at how TV networks view the league’s near-future prospects. According to Sports Business Daily, only three networks have bid for TNF, with CBS and NBC offering a lower rights fee than they paid in 2017, when they spent a combined $450 million on the package. Fox was reportedly the lone network to submit a bid that would increase the current rights fees, though the amount is unknown at this time.

still think the NFL should place teams' byes around the game if they want TNF to be a decent product

They just need to get rid of TNF but they are too arrogant to do that

cut the preseason down two games, extend the regular season by giving teams 2 byes, and schedule your TNF match ups around that.

doubt NFL owners go for losing the cash grab that is the preseason though

Please, if only to get better college matchups on Thursday nights. The AAC should have some big games nearly every week on Thursday.

I don't know why this isn't brought up more. Pit two teams who had their byes the previous weekend against each other on Thursdays. It isn't hard.

Week 2 teams would have a bye week 1, which the NFL would like to avoid unless there's an emergency like this year. Those 2 teams would get 16 straight games.

Other teams would have their bye weeks in December, like the Saints and Falcons this year.

And then there are some teams that don't play on Thursday in a given season.

This is sarcasm right? They only show preseason in home markets pretty much. I had to watch the saints on replays and even then, I didn't really go out of my way to watch.

But owners charge season ticket holders full price for those games. If they lost 2 preseason games, season ticket prices would go up.

Then the team gets to make a deal with a local broadcaster for extra broadcast rights, and all the local businesses line up to sponsor the broadcasts because the regular season ad spots are 80 percent national.

On principle, I refuse to watch TNF. If the Saints play and win, I will watch my DVR recording of the game.
