Just an idea and thought I have for a new playoff format for baseball and softball. First of all, the split needs to be done away with for it to work really good. I’m sure this idea is possible for the playoffs even with the split but doing away with the split would just be a lot better. The split just needs to be done away with regardless of the playoff format anyways.

Pretty much the format would be 8 regional hosts and they would be the top 8 teams in the power rankings. They would still be paired up with each other just like they are now. For example, the 1 seed would still be matched up with the 16,17, and 32 seed. The 1 seed would be the number 1 team in the regional, the 16 seed would be the number 2 team in that regional, the 17 seed would be the number 3 team in that regional, and the 32 seed would be the number 4 team in that regional. They would play a double elimination tournament over the course of a weekend. It’s pretty much formatted just like a college baseball regional.

The 8 regionals are still matched up with each other just like a normal playoff bracket. For example, the winner of the number 1 seeded regional would play the winner of the number 8 seeded regional in a best of 3 series and the location would be at the higher seededs ball park. For example, the number 2 team in the number 1 seeded regional wins that regional, and the number 1 team in the number 8 seeded team wins that regional, so the number 8 seeded team (because they are the number 8 team in the power rankings opposed to the number 16 team in the power rankings) would be the host for the next round in a best of 3 series. Then the 4 winners of the best of 3 series go to Sulphur and either play just single elimination just like it is now, or they could play a 4 team tournament for the state championship.

I’ll post what this format would look like based off of last years power rankings for 5A combined and I’ll just choose random teams as winners to show how the format works for the rounds after the regionals. I’ll put * to show the regional winners. I’m sure I’m not the first person to come up with this idea and post about it but I think it’d be a cool idea and format to have. At least with 4A and 5A because they have more pitching depth than lower classes so yes I do know that this could be an issue for lower class teams because they don’t have the depth that upper class teams have.

I'm not sure if this is a small step from how they do it now (I only know how it was as recently as 05), but this seems like a lot of money you'd be asking people to spend on hotels to have this many games played in the playoffs.

Also, I don't really understand why you would drag out the early to middle part of the playoffs then go straight into single elimination when the best teams are left.

They could just go straight to a CWS style double elimination tournament with separate brackets and the winners of the 2 brackets playing a best 2 of 3 or just 1 game as they won't have as much pitching as college teams. Or the 2 brackets could be at separate locations and the best 2 of 3 championship a week later. All of this after the 8 regionals you proposed. Seems too long though.

A little quibble, but you have to have Chalmette and Higgins in instead of Lafayette and Thibodaux at 31 and 32 since we tied for our district championship last year

you do that bc the LHSAA wants to have a showcase of a championship at their event

Do we really need 32 teams qualifying for playoff in each class? Fix that first.

I love tournament baseball so on the surface I like this idea.

I don't know how this would impact travel costs, etc. I'd imagine they would go up.

And the split ain't dying - the split is here to stay, sadly.

I would do it how the LHSAA currently does and have the single elimination round first, and then have the four team tournaments leading directly into the state semifinals... That way the worst teams that would complain about costs, etc., can play their one game and go home.

Maybe I would also have four brackets, North, East, South, and West to minimize cross-state travel

Someone has already stated why they do it like that and it has nothing to do with the game of baseball. It has everything to do with greed.

No muthur fukking reason that the state championship for baseball should be a single game!

I think you are on the right track. Currently some teams have to travel Tuesday and then turn around and travel again the same weekend. Think Haughton 2017. I think this would cut down on the length of playoffs. Lets look at the current format:

Bi-District: Single Elimination Monday or Tuesday
Regionals: Best of three
Quarterfinals: Best of three
State: Semis on Friday, Finals Saturday

My New Format:

I like your idea but I would change it some. Keep your first round double elimination. Start it on Thursday with games at 4:00 and 7:00, same thing for Friday. Saturday games could go at 1:00 and 4:00. Let the traveling team decide if they would like to play the game Saturday or move it to Sunday at 2:00. The second round or quarterfinals would be similar, highest seeds on side of bracket host. State championship weekend starts on Thursday-Saturday with 5A starting at 7:00, 4A at 4:00, 3A on South at 7:00, 2A on South at 4:00. 1A-C can play on Friday and Saturday, single elimination on field 37 starting at 1:00.

What do you do if the home team doesn't have a lighted field? Force them to play elsewhere?

No way New Iberia would let their kids miss multiple days of school and pony up 10 hotel rooms in West Monroe.

Also, consider that in many places baseball playoffs coincide with senior final exams.

Unless, you could get every public school district to agree to push Spring Break back to late April instead of Easter, which will never happen.

what they could do:

Tuesday or Wednesday

4 Airline at 1 Barbe
3 Comeaux at 2 Dutchtown

then Saturday: 10:00, 1:00, and 4:00 if no lights, 1:00, 4:00, and 7:00 if lights

all four teams at Barbe. Two get eliminated

then Sunday, after church: Championship game and the if necessary game.

if the home team advances to championship Sunday, only one of the four teams will need to book hotel rooms

related question... do any schools in this state still try not to play games on Sundays????
