This is why we should have an 8 team playoff

5 division winners plus 3 at-large bids. Re-seed the teams after determining who makes the playoff. If a G5 team is ranked #14 or better include them in the playoff. First round would be played at higher seeds home stadium.
This year the matchups would probably be
8 Western Michigan
at
1 Alabama
5 Penn State
at
4 Washington
7 USC
at
2 Ohio State
6 Oklahoma
at
3 Clemson

I have iffy feelings on the G5 detail, but I agree with your overall premise.

They would take the place of Penn State

Why over Colorado?

It's no improvement on the four team which was no improvement on the 8 team
Why is it so hard to understand that Division I college football is a different animal than every other sport. There is no equity in scheduling or relative conference strength. Unlike basketball and baseball, teams can only play one game a week which limits the size of the tournament field
No matter what the format, there will always be some controversy of someone being left out.

Colorado would be left out because I have them losing to Washington and they lost to USC soo..

It would be an improvement over the current system because winning your conference would mean an automatic entry into the playoff.

I stopped right here.

They could nix the G5 requirement and I would be Michigan in there instead.

So do we let the Sun Belt, AAC and Mac champs in?
Then if not "winnin your conference" doesn't get you in, just winning a conference that was decided before the season for whatever reason gets you in.
There is far more influence from "off the field" in a four team playoff than there was a two.
Would be that way in an 8 team too.

Is an 8 team playoff with 5 guaranteed conf champs and 3 at larges not better than this? You take 5 slots out of controversy entirely. At that point, no more questions are asked about who won the conference championship, and I think the controversy decreases some.
To truly solve the overall issue would require a total overhaul of CFB. That would include, in my opinion, basically kicking everyone outside of the P5 out of the division and limiting the teams to those of the P5. Those who want to expand can snatch some teams from the G5 is desired.
That would probably take some realignment etc., but it is possible, and it's one of the few routes that can be taken to improve overall schedules and solve the controversy issue.

In my opinion, the non P5 just needs to separate from DIV 1 and go into their own division. The likelihood of a non P5 team ever winning or even getting into the playoff is about slim to none.

We don't have enough teams to fill out a 4-team playoff and you want to,expand???
Why do people want to ruin the best regular season in all of sports??? It amazes me that people bitch about the NFL ratings plummeting and then turn around and want to make college football more like the NFL.

At least five of the teams in the OP would not have even been considered title contenders under the Old Jumbled Up System (OJUS)

Hell yeah, a 16 game season stretching into mid january.

quote:Holy hyperbole batman. Expanding to 8 DOES NOT RUIN THE REGULAR SEASON. I'm tired of people saying that stupid shite. You only really "ruin" the regular season if the playoff expands to unrealistically high numbers. CFB has 128 teams, and currently only 4 spots. Roughly 3% of teams get into the playoff. Every regular season game still matters. Additionally, the detail of higher seed having home-field advantage solves some of that issue. The NFL with far less teams and a bigger playoff absolutely whips the arse of CFB in ratings year in and year out.

NFL postseason makes CFB postseason look like child's play in terms of entertainment, and perhaps the biggest detail, it isn't ridiculously controversial.
