There was a reason the PAC12 wanted for $50,000,000 per school from ESPN

Publicly, the University of California Board of Regents’ threats to force UCLA to stay in the Pac-12 and avoid hurting UC Berkeley were viewed as posturing, bluffs to get attention and possibly some money from the departing Bruins.
Privately, Kliavkoff was deeply engaged with a small group of regents about the framework of a deal that would lead to the regents voting to block UCLA’s move — even though the regents did not want to set a precedent of overturning a monumental campus-specific decision.
The regents did the math. UCLA was supposed to make $62 million per year from the Big Ten’s new mega media rights deal. The Bruins’ travel costs to compete in the Midwest-based conference were expected to be in the range of $10 million to $12 million annually. So, the regents gave Kliavkoff a magic number. If he could guarantee the Bruins $52 million annually during the five years of the league’s next media deal, the regents promised Kliavkoff a vote heavily in favor of UCLA staying in the Pac-12.
Not only would $50,000,000 - $52,000,000 per school convince the University of California BOR to block the UCLA move; USC would probably have stayed too. It was a hail mary and unlikely to work but at least the ask makes sense now.

So California politicians fricked everyone in the PAC 12 because they wanted to stop UCLA’s attempt to better themselves in favor of an equitable outcome for all.
Literally poetic.

It gets better or maybe worse depending on your perspective.

Not only did Kliavkoff need the Pac-12 presidents to sign off on the guaranteed money, but they would also have to take the leap of faith to sign a grant of rights binding the schools together without knowing the exact details of what their media deal would be. Lastly, the Pac-12 would have to pay the $15-million fee UCLA would owe to the Big Ten for breaking its agreement.
The article does not come out and say it but that is about the time that the Colorado talking to the Big12 rumors began.

Some professor told a president the rights we worth $50M so thats what he demanded.
I'd be stunned if that president wasn't Michael Crow.

Yes. Certain university presidents believed that the PAC12 was worth $50,000,000 per school and if the PAC12 could get that much then the University of California BOR would have blocked UCLA's move. It was an unrealistic ask but it make sense now.

So in order to prevent UCLA from leaving they rejected an offer that would have kept the PAC-12 intact. Looks like California screwed the PAC-12 again.

Well that and some professor told them they were worth $50,000,000 per school. The potential for keeping UCLA in the conference made the PAC12 counter ESPN's offer of $30,000,000 per school with $50,000,000 per school instead of a more reasonable $35,000,000 per school. ESPN was prepared to pay $35,000,000 per school but the $50,000,000 per school ask made them say no and walk away from negotiations. If the PAC12 had just let UCLA go and countered with $35,000,000 per school the PAC would have survived.

Which is why I hope OSU and WSU join the AAC or MW and leave Cal and Stanford and Cal and Stanford end up as independents.
