Huh, I thought this was an indoor tournament.

I should have faded like I mentioned, but I've been too dialed in to CFB betting these days, that putting in tennis plays hasn't even been on my mind.

Unfortunately, there's some truth to this. I stand by the Bama thread I started, but my gambling results the past two weekends have not been positive.

quote:

’m going through Twitter and there’s some clip about Kyrgios toying with Klahn. I check the final score and sure enough... loss.

He’s the perfect representative for Millenials in general. He lost but his clip got 20K Likes, so it was a good day.

Some guy mentioned that his girlfriend also lost in the 1st round, and that might explain his tank. No idea if there’s any correlation, but that would be a nice under-the-radar angle if true

I've completely given up trying to figure that guy out. In a talent squandering contest, I can't think of another athlete in any sport in any era that takes out Kyrgios except Marcus Dupree. Who else is in the conversation?

Uh, was this tournament always outside? I'm confused by what I'm seeing.

Is it outside? Wikipedia said it was in an arena. I just assumed it was indoors.

Okay, figured it out. It's outdoors, but with a retractable roof. A really focking badass looking retractable roof.

Nice. Can we show this to Paris?

Makes sense. I just know I've seen a final or two with the roof closed. I had no idea what the weather is like there now.

Is Rafa slated to return this year?

Have to agree. Check out Kyrgios sleepwalking through 3 sets and almost winning. His hand skills are off the charts.

I drank a little juice and took Coric -3 games at -160.

Daniil might not get a chance to beat Fed.

This Zhang dude's game looks like an Asian version of Coric. It's pretty damn uncanny.

I just saw the ticker at the end. He barely won that match, and stylistic similarity to Coric notwithstanding, that guy is a challenger-level player. I'm wondering if Daniil shot his wad last week. I'm definitely less optimistic on his chances against the great smug than i was when I wrote that post.

I should have gone De Minaur and "handcuffed" him and Alex Z and Shapov together.
But, hindsight and stuff....

I definitely wouldn't have predicted that the basil herb was gonna routine my favorite oversize-cap-wearing bllonde canuck teenager. Is Basil doing the state-sponsored russian doping protocol now or something? Never seen this kind of form from him. I realize that's a cynical way of looking at it, but I saw "Icarus", so....just spitballing.

Thank y'all for bringing this thread back to the top, been missing it. What a drop off tennis takes after the Open.

I just read that Sock is 6-19 for the season and won one of his last thirteen ATP singles matches. If he loses early in Paris, he drops out of the top 150. Two consecutive doubles majors should take the sting out of that.

A few more words on Honey Nut Kyrgios:

What I think is the most enigmatic thing about the guy is that he's not an a-hole or a douche in real life. He's very well-liked in the locker rooms, and he seems to play team competitions with less aloofness than he does as a general matter of course when he's playing on the tour.

This confuses me. Usually the headcase types fit more into the petulant spoiled brat mold, but I'm not saying this type of behavior from Kyrgios except when he's competing for himself on the tour. This makes me think his mental issues are much deeper than I can really wrap my brain around. Like, maybe he's deeply insecure and doesn't see himself as being deserving of all the spoils that come with being an elite tennis player, and so he self-sabotages to keep himself professionally in the Jack Sock zone even though his god-given talent is screaming "let me win majors, fricker" to every tennis pundit and all their cousins.

But I'm just spitballing because, again, I think the guy is more of a riddle than my simple brain can figure out.

Coric, was stress-free, no perspiration Free Money. It's nice to get those from time to tie.

He's so insanely good at doubles. It might even be appropriate to consider his doubles prowess in a historical light; as in, he might be in that convo with Johnny Mac.

Did he lose in dubs at the Laver Cup? That's not rhetorical, because I'm not sure, but I don't think he did. And he was going up against the likes of the great smug and djokovic...on the same court, among other notables.

While he's not quite reached Kyrgiosian levels of enigmaticy*, Sock really should be a solid top 15, or maybe even top 10 singles player. I can't quite understand why he's fallen so far in that regard. Some people have said fitness, but I'm not completely buying that. He played in the WTF last ,year, which is around thanksgiving, and the Aussie started back in January, right? and he prolly played a tuneup event before Melbourne.

I mean, how out of shape can a man get in a month? I don't think it's possible to completely get out of shape that quickly to such an extent that it would explain his play last year at this time to his play now. I mean, it could be a component, but I'm not buying that as the proximate cause.

His weaknesses are masked and his strengths are enhanced

Strengths

Massive forehand spin

Enhanced in doubles because trying to volley off that is just stupid impossible

Weaknesses

Backhand and willingness to battle

He can play on half the court and doubles is quick concise points and not a mental grind
