Set Up - Dennis Eckersley
When was he a Set up guy?
He started in Boston, Chicago, and Cleveland but then he came back in Oakland and St Louis as a Closer.
But if Eck is your set up guy, why do you want a guy that throws a cutter and slider setting up your closer who throws a cutter?

Dude, it's the "ultimate lineup"
Anyways, I'll take my chances with the 2 greatest closers in the history of baseball pitching the 8th & 9th

I would not mind that either, but was just asking why you would set it that way. I would switch it around, as you can let Rivera go 2 innings and then get Eck in the 9th. That way your starter only had to go 6 and possibly through a line up 2.5 times.

Eckersley and Rivera are the 2 best relievers/closers of all time...thats why

Debatable
Sutter
Smith
Smoltz
Willhelm
Gossage
All of these guys and more have arguments to be considered the best.

Look at it this way...when someone asks you "Who are the two greatest closers of all time?"
The first two that come to the top of my head are Eckersley and Rivera.
The only other two that would come to mind would be Hoffman and Smith, but that's after thinking of Eck & Rivera

Lee Smith--Better stuff nastier and played on teams like the Cubs and Cardinals where he didnt get as many opportunities
Sutter--Was considered the ultimate closer pitched more than 1 inning came up with Splitter arm troubles derailed career.
Smoltz--If was a closer entire career would have as many saves as Rivera and Eck. He and Eck are the only 2 men in baseball history to have 20 and 50 seasons. Had more than one pitch and played big in big situations.
Willhelm--HOF pitched multiple innings and was considered first true closer/reliever
Gossage--Same as Willhelm and was nastier than Eck and the Yankees won multiple championships due to his role after coming over from Chicago.
Best closer of all time to me is Lee Smith. He was intimidating, threw hard and was just incredible. I am not discounting Eck or Rivera but they are not head and shoulders above everyone else, like people claim.

IMHO only Hoffman and Rollie Fingers who won a Cy Young, MVP, and World Series in 1 season i believe 1981?? I'd have to look it up
Rivera was nearly unhittable and rarely allowed baserunners
Eck had more saves than baserunners as a closer, thats impressive

Fingers did not win a WS after he left the A's so it wasnt 81.
In 82 he was traded to the Brewers from San Diego(?) part of the Brewers, Cardinals, Padres trade.
Cards had Sutter and Brewers had Fingers as closers in 82.
It was because of David Greene being hurt that the Cards kept Willie and did not trade him. Greene was suppossed to be the next great Cardinal OF.
