i am curious about what peej's list would be

1979 Penn St. vs. Bama
1901 Rose Bowl
1969 Cotton Bowl-Texas Vs. ND
1984 Orange Bowl Neb Vs. Miami
1970 Rose Bowl Mich Vs. USC. Thsi game brougght Mich back into prominance and it made what what the Rose Bowl then became.
1964 Cotton Bowl. Navy vs. Texas. The last time a service academy was ever this close top a #1 ranking.
2006 Rose Bowl. USC vs. Texas. Its the ONE bowl that had the two best teams in it in history. Yes Miami 2001 and Neb 1995 may have been better but did not meet in a bowl.

2002 Miami vs OSU. Yes the better team lost that game. A huge upset I am sure most thought that the game would be a repeat of the year before game when Miami Routed NEB.

1984 Holidy Bowl.Brigham Young Vs Michigan. The only National Title won by a mid-major.

NOT abowl game but shuld be counted as one. 1971 Neb vs. OU in the greatest game ever IMO. It meant SOOO much at the time it was played it was amazing.

If this is your definition of "Important" than why not the 1960 (i think) Cotton Bowl where Syracuse and Ernie Davis beat Texas. That was pretty damn important game in ushering in segregation and set Davis up to be the first black Heisman winner.

I would say it's a fair statement that segregation changed the game forever.

3. 1993 Sugar Bowl - Alabama vs. Miami

Before the BCS was even thought of, there was the Bowl Coalition.

I agree this should probably be on the list for the reason that it was the first experiment and attempt at matching 1 vs. 2.

And Tulane turned down the invitation that game. Another way the Greenies screwed us.

Odd trivia: So did Colgate University... and possibly a couple other Northern universities. There was growing anti-football sentiment (especially among college professors) at the time, and I know for a fact that Colgate's professors vetoed the team's intentions to travel to Pasadena. This really bit Colgate in the butt in 1932, when their team had an undefeated and unscored upon record, but the Rose Bowl, in turn, ignored them.

Anyway, I'm not a Bama fan, but those of you who don't realize the importance of the 1926 Rose Bowl game should find a college kid with access to academic journals and check out this article by historian Andrew Doyle:

There aren't many college football games that inspire scholarly discourse. However, Alabama's victory had mind-boggling implications for the reconstruction of Southern identity in the 1920's and 1930's.

2006-2007 Florida vs. Ohio State? the way underdog Florida came in and whipped OSU still has a ripple effect even today as the Big Ten still hasn't recovered

2006-2007 Boise State vs. Oklahoma- two fluke plays by Boise ensure that any team who plays a two-bit schedule gets national championship consideration if they go undefeated

2003 Oklahoma vs. Washington State- yes, it became okay for other conferences to play in the rose bowl

1926 Rose is legitimately up there, but maybe not #1. 1984 Orange should be near the top, along with the 2006 Rose and 2007 Fiesta. Others I'll throw out:

1987 Fiesta - #1 Miami vs #2 Penn State, put the Fiesta on the map, most watched college football game in history
1980 Holiday - BYU comes back from 45-25 down with two and a half minutes to go to beat SMU
2012 BCS Championship - The matchup that spurred a four team playoff

Can't believe no one mentioned this before.

In reality, sort of the first BCS title game and ushered in the era of the need to pit #1 vs. #2 -

Up to this point, the Fiesta Bowl had been considered a minor bowl game, or, at best, a mid-major bowl game. However, since the only two unbeaten teams in the nation in 1986 were independents not affiliated with a conference, none of the four "major" bowl games were able to accommodate the match-up.

Since then, the Rose has invited some SEC teams. Why has the Sugar never invited a PAC team?

Patronage aside, one of the most memorable for me was 96 Fiesta with Nebraska vs. Florida. It was a great game(briefly) because of the contrasting styles. Osbourne and his cornfed option steamroller vs. Spurrier's corvette speed fun 'n' gun.

For old school black and blue football guys the 62-24 beatdown the Huskers delivered was just epic.
