...this is just a guess on their part that the sports world has just accepted, right? Or am I missing something? If you're downfield from the kick on the sideline and the ball is 30-50 feet above the ground when it goes out of bounds, there is no way you can know with that amount of certainty where it went out. But he lands on that yard line like he'd bet his life on it. Doesn't consult anyone on it.

That is all.

They coordinate with a referee from another angle - it’s not just him making that call

I watched a video one time on how they do it. I forgot all the details but multiple refs are involved.

There is a method used to pinpoint.

I am not sure the details but refs are trained on it

Another ref is standing at where the punter was and visually watching where the ball went out.

Downfield ref runs until he is inline. Usually the ref standing at the spot holds his hand up or whistles when he is aligned.

He confidently keeps it confidential.

So they must be getting input in an earpiece or something? I feel like I rarely see them talk to another ref before or after spotting it.

They don’t pinpoint shite. Place the ball on the nearest 5 yard marker to move the game along and limit measurements. And that’s not just on punts.

You jog up the sideline looking at the ref behind the punter who watches the flight of the ball and signals where to stop

Yes he does. He consults with another official who had a different angle, as someone already said. Think of it as a form of triangulation.

So they can triangulate but not determine what targeting is.

When a punt like that goes OOB the deep official on that side, FJ or SJ, will raise up his hand to signal to the white hat(who has the best view of it most times) to "chop" him in at the spot where he saw the kick go OOB. Once the deep gets to the spot the white hat moves his arm.down in a chopping motion and that's the spot that the SJ/FJ stop at.

Yes, but I didn’t say how accurate their triangulation is.

He doesn't, he is running until the ref next to the punter puts his hand down

Not sure about college, but I pretty sure it's the same as in HS.

The covering official on the sideline will walk with his arm in the air toward the spot and the white hat will chop when the covering official gets to the spot where the ball is believed to have gone OOB.
