I don't know what they settled for, but he was seeking 15 million.
Maybe 5-9 million range? Who knows..

Once he used, his name to promote the film, it became fair game, IMHO

Ehhh. I don't know about that. Just because Chuck's fight "inspired" Stallone to write Rocky doesn't mean he owes Wepner anything. He never used Wepner's likeness to promote the fight (not that it would have helped). It takes a lot to make a quality film. I think it's quite a stretch to say Wepner played a huge role in it. He got paid for fighting Ali. That's what he did. It was on display and open to the public. Stallone drew an inspiration from it. You don't hear Ali whining about wanting to be compensated for inspiring Apollo Creed.
Just because Wepner's fallen on hard times and we feel bad for him doesn't mean he's entitled to compensation from Stallone.
Agree. He definitely inspired Stallone to make Rocky but Chuck and his friends assertion that he is Rocky is a giant overstatement. If Stallone were a real dick he would have countersued Wepner for using Rocky to promote himself.

I guess you missed the early part when the lawyer explained the law(s) about using likeness or whatever the term used.
Regardless, Stallone could have stepped early and paid him on his on especially after using the wrestling scene in movie 3.
"Hey, man. Can I use this in a movie? I'll pay up."

Highly doubt Wepner was the 1st washed up boxer to fight a wrestler. If I make a movie about football and have the star QB go to jail for dogfighting I won't have to pay Mike Vick.

You should have paid him Sly.

initially I could see the arguement for sly......but after the third with the fight against the wrestler it was blatant.

I'm aware of law on the issue. You heard Wepner's attorney explain his side of the argument in a manner that made it sound favorable to his client.
Remember that a settlement is not an admission of guilt. Companies settle all the time as a calculated move--factoring in the likelihood of losing a trial plus the cost of litigation.

Apparently the law states you are wrong. Wepner got paid after the courts sided with him over and over. Then settlement.
Yep, you would end up paying Vick.

Courts didn't side with him they just settled.

Courts sided with Wepner over Stallone in case getting thrown out....led to settlement.

Yea he just won a motion Wepner would be the biggest moron on the planet if he won the case in court and then settled.

I didn't watch the documentary, but didn't they fight in 1975? Rocky came out the next year....that would've been a quick copy if Sly wrote, filmed, directed, and produced Rocky after watching Hepner's fight just the year before.
