The game has passed Dabo by just like it’s passed Mike Gundy by.

I’m no Dabo fan, but he hasn’t sunk to the bottom of the basement with Gundy.

Gundy is an absolute dumpster fire.

I'm an Alabama man... "competing" is winning a championship, not showing up and getting your doors blown off.

Before NIL and transform portal gave you B1G underperformers an advantage you routinely got your assess kicked by random SEC team of the year.

You guys haven't won a championship since you had a coach that gave you an advantage in 2014-15.

What a total embarrassment of a post.

I'm just glad the "Clemsoning" verb has not been lost to history.

I get what you're saying, but you are all over the place with your argument. And actually end up proving the opposite of your point.

quote:

If you pay somebody a lot more money and/or offer significantly better resources to fulfill their professional ambitions, they aren’t staying somewhere just because it’s their alma mater.

You keep saying this, but there is only one example of it taking place, which I brought up. You have no examples to offer of coaches at their Alma Mater leaving to win.

Kyle Wittingham had several chances to move to another job and never did, because Utah is his Alma Mater. Mike Gundy was a hot name in the early 2010's, never went anywhere because he was at his school. Pat Fitzgerald came up several times for bigger jobs in the Big 10.

quote:

You mentioned Cristobal going to Miami. Miami has won five national titles (close to several others) and dominated CFB at times like few programs have. He’s resurrected a program that had potential and Miami looks about as good as anyone right now.

This runs completely counter to your argument. Oregon has the best facilities, funding and support pretty much in all of college football. Miami plays in a half-empty NFL stadium has mediocre facilities and funding that pales in comparison to Oregon, yet he went there only because it was his Alma Mater, everything was better set up for him to win big at Oregon.

quote:

But how often do you see a coach who’s already successful at top 10-15 program (all-time) with top pay and national championship potential leave to go anywhere? Alma mater or not, you typically have to have something more to offer to justify movement.

This is a different argument altogether, moving out of top-10 job vs. leaving your Alma Mater isn't the same conversation. Typically the only reason someone would make that kind of move would be to go to your Alma Mater, like Jim Harbaugh or Christobal.

quote:

Coaches and players sacrificing their personal ambitions for their school is a fan fantasy. They will opt for something better just as quickly as you will want to fire or bench them for something better.

Again, you keep saying this and I get it, but the facts don't actually bear it out. Actually there are more examples of coaches not leaving programs to stay at their Alma Mater than not.

I bet Clark Lea doesn't leave Vanderbilt.

From Nashville, went to high school at MBA down the street from Vandy, played football at Vandy, die hard Vandy fan his entire life, entire family in Nashville, Vanderbilt has low expectations for success so he can have some really bad years and have job security, still getting paid millions.

It’s not a shite show (yet) like we’ve seen with other big programs in the past that completely nose dive. They’ve lost to LSU with a chance to tie with the ball at the LSU 15 yd line with over a minute to go. Lost to a good Ga Tech team in the final seconds on a 55 yd kick. Dabo does a good job of keeping his teams together. He’s always been best when playing the underdog card and now they are underdogs.

I’m in no way saying they are great but don’t be surprised if they keep the wheels on the remaining games of the season.

So they lose to a team that’s currently top 5 and some peoples projected playoff champion - with a chance to win it at the end of the- and then lose on a 55 yard FG against a GT team they some projected to win 10 games and go to the ACC CG - and the wheels are falling off?

Sure - Clemson has no doubt been a disappointment this year. They are not a national championship team/contender. But they could still make a run and make it to the playoffs.

Now, if Clemson loses to Syracuse, UNC, or NCState in the coming weeks, that’s when you can say the wheels are starting to come off.

Hmmm.

While I agree that there are a lot of coaches that just want to be a HC no matter the program Brent Key absolutely gives a shite about coaching his alma mater. Does that mean he never leaves for a "bigger job"? No. But he's not just going to bolt for the first big job that calls.

Jon Smith left his alma mater Oregon State for Michigan State a couple years ago. Let’s just say it hasn’t gone well so far.

NOPE, its not like your coach has wowed. Dabo was great at recruiting, pitching players. Now its all about who pays the highest. Thank the NCAA run by libs, liberal lawyers and lib courts, my guess is they were all three in cahoots. Now we watch a bunch of average teams, none are great like they used to be.

You can add Bryan Harsin to the list. Left Boise for Auburn.

And I would argue that a coach staying at a smaller or less prestigious program (alumnus or not) where he has been successful enough to attract attention might just be playing the long game in a profession without a lot of job security instead of just being enamored with their alma mater.

If Dabo Swinney had left Clemson after 2018 and someone else came in in 2019 and produced the same results we have seen from Dabo since 2019, that coach would be a fired arse by now. But Dabo has survived because of what he did years ago and a hefty contract. If (hypothetically) Dabo had been hired at Bama when Saban retired, those Clemson accomplishments that have kept the wolves at bay as the program has declined would be irrelevant.

Success at a program (whether you’re an alumnus or not) generally buys at least some time to navigate difficult waters. You lose that when you change schools. It’s definitely something for a coach to consider when other schools come calling.

But rest assured on this: One way or another, coaches are thinking about what is best for themselves and their families - just like everyone else who works for a living.

2 Elite College QBs back to back

people tend to forget those two weren't back to back.
they had another dude in between and proceeded to lose to a pathetic syracuse (finished 4-8) and got their brains beat in by the best team they played (bama in their bowl game).

I've said it for years and years...dabo is a worse version of richt if he doesn't have an elite megastud #1 overall draft pick at QB. To think that even ~3 years ago people were claiming this guy is the 2nd or 3rd best coach in all of cfb is just mind blowing
