I think Tiger should approach this course much like he did the The Open Championship where he used his long irons and fairway woods to consistently find the fairway rather than pound his driver. I forget the year, but he was masterful in that tournament.

-At Olympic, most fairways slope in the opposite direction of the hole layout. For example, a dogleg left fairway will slope dramatically left-to-right. This kills distance

there are Opens at Olympic every few years. the fairways were always like that.

new equipment made it necessary to change those holes from 5's to 4's. Half the golfers on the O-T can hit it 300 yards now.

That was 06, I think he hit driver twice all 4 rounds, pretty impressive.

There hasn't been one there in 14 years, Most of the current top players were teenagers then. Outside of a few practice rounds, none of them have played it before.

number is really just arbitrary when you think about it.

They could make it a par 40. The fewest strokes wins regardless.

Exactly. Changing a 510yd par 5 to a par 4 doesnt mean the hole is any more difficult.

Who do yall think this sets up well for? I would guess guys that hit it straight with good short games. I'm liking Luke Donald and Justin Rose to finish high.

Luke Donald obviously has a great short game (if he's not the best bunker player / putter on tour he is really close to it), but I don't know if he hits it straight enough to win a U.S. Open set up like this. He hits it off line a good bit, and when he gets in the rough it won't be a short iron to the green.

I was just reading an article and they said that hole will be shortened for 1 or 2 of the rounds.

Not sure if this has been touched on, but the yardages are a bit misleading. This course has significant sloping, so some of those holes will be play much shorter (some longer). Also, it will be really firm so the ball will run out a good bit.

Is it going to be possible for anyone to reach the 670 par 5 in 2?

I don't think so. Not with a sharp dogleg and a super thin fairway. You can barely make out the fairway in these pictures below. Very daunting.

Hole by Hole Guide of the US Open

quote:

No. 16, 670 yards, par 5: With a new tee that won't be used every day, this becomes the longest hole in U.S. Open history. If length isn't enough, it's a sharp dogleg to the left and the fairway narrows right at 300 yards. The hole continues to bend to the left until the green, and shots that miss the green long or to the left will bounce even farther away because of the closely mown grass beyond the green.

Another description of No. 16:

No. 16, Par 5 (670 yards)
quote:

A new back tee makes an already fearsome, banana-dogleg left hole even more ominous – and into the lengthiest hole in all of major championship golf. From the 670-yard markers, which they’ll use twice in the four grounds, the drive comes perilously close to overhanging trees and has to carry 250+ yards just to reach the fairway – no simple task in the notoriously heavy air here. It’s easy to snap it dead left here, as Arnold Palmer did in 1966, when he didn’t even find fairway until his third shot and still had over 200 yards to the green. A massive front-right bunker gobbles up more approaches than any other hazard on the golf course; it also creates an unconscious tendency in avoiding it to go long and left into what has now been cut down into a steep fall away recovery area.

No chance without the best wind in the world. Players are going to have easily 110+ yards into the green. Also the shape of the hole with the mature trees is going to makes it almost impossible to cut off part of the dogleg. My assessment is bubba with have a 7 iron or longer into that green one day.

I would not say "not a chance in hell" but it's gonna be tough...If I see some LSU players getting it on #3 at UC in 2 I can imagine that if someone hits it down the middle then there is a chance!

If you drive it 330 you still have 340 into the green. No way players are hitting that green.
