Maybe they risk losing him by going that route? That's my guess.

Just read a little more about it. Since Smyly was traded to Texas, it's believed the Cubs told the Rangers to take Smyly and his $7M or the Cubs would decline the option. So, the Rangers got Smyly and his contract and the Cubs picked up the option. I guess it's a wash unless Smyly balls out in Texas.

Ah I was wondering if one had to do with the other. Makes sense.

So then Hammels is really just a $13m guy?

No extension for Maddon going into his lame duck year.

LINK

Also, interesting comment from Theo at the end...

quote:

"I think we're really talented," Epstein said Monday. "It's time to produce, or else there's a chance for signifcant change for the group. So that's really where our focus is. ... It's a pivotal year."

Reinforces his remarks from his end of the year press conference about results not potential. But, it also insinuates there may not be significant change going into 2019. I've read/heard a few different Chicago media members saying that they don't expect the Cubs to be in the Harper/Machado sweepstakes. If they don't move anyone off the current roster, then that would be in line with those statements. It'll be interesting to see how this off season plays out.

So from that quote Olney thinks that they might trade him “as early as this winter”??? That’s a bit of a stretch. It sounds like Theo is basically saying never say never. If the angels offered trout for Bryant, yeah you’d probably trade Bryant. That ain’t happening.

Seems to indicate the opposite, unless a team blows the Cubs away. Headline could've read, "Cubs willing to trade anyone." But that wouldn't get as many clicks.

Man how many dudes in baseball would take that as a “struggle year”

I really don't understand why that article was written like that. Sounds like an opinion piece to get clicks. It's no secret the Cubs/Bryant haven't gotten anywhere in contract talks. I hate the phrase "as soon as this winter." I could die as early as right now.

So Buster is basically saying since KB hasn't signed an extension, Theo says no ones untouchable, and KB has been injured, then MAYBE POSSIBLY COULD see KB traded...weak.

Theo is playing some mind games right now. And I think most of it has to do with Boras.

I think so too. Was it Boras who put out that KB allegedly turned down a $200M extension?

I believe Theo just said no one is safe, and nothing was directed towards KB.

Correct.

But saying Schwarber could be traded doesn't draw the same response as a Bryant article would.

Buster trying to rile me up on a Friday. It worked but now back to your regularly scheduled program.
