but anyway, three points for a win is what soccer does. But hockey isn't soccer. We don't make the jokes about it being scoreless like we do for soccer, therefore 2 points for a win is enough

Mathematically it makes sense to go to 3-2-1. To keep things competitive the current system works great.

The loser point keeps the standings tight which keeps the conference races right all the way down to the final games. Meaningful games create interest and sell tickets.

Securing that one point in regulation and going for the bonus points in OT creates OT excitement. Teams go for it in OT because they've already secured one point and will take risks for another.

The system may be flawed but it actually works.
