Watch what happens if USC beats Stanford

Not even close. There's no one, not even Darnold, that's on the level of Reggie and Matt.

Yeah beating Stanford wouldn't mean shite.

USC had 2 of college football's biggest superstars of all time, and were coming off a national championship. Not to mention you had lendale, who may not have had superstar status like Reggie or Matt, but was a pretty big personality in his own right.

USC would need to win a natty this year, have darnold win the heisman, and come back next year. Even that wouldn't get close to USC in the mid 00s unless another superstar emerges.

Not today. It's Hollywood. They create legends. Sam Darnold went from good QB that only people who followed college football knew to the cover of 32328909 magazines/instant Heisman favorite almost overnight.

As mentioned, it has to be a big city with bright lights that loves stars.

Miami, L.A. - look at the 30 for 30's on the Canes and the Trojans.

I can think of very few places that would happen if a program went on a roll outside of Miami and L.A. - maybe Austin?

I mean it could happen. Like others said would have to be a big market or historical team. Need the coach, the playmaker, and the qb.

Don't forget about their 03 national title team.

I think Carroll contributed to that fame by this easy going open practices, celebs on the sidelines.

The public had access to the players and that made them stars and what got them in trouble.

TMZ all-access...but the press they got...only 80s Miami got that.

It could happen again but only when USC gets good again. I don't any other team that could get that sort of glamor anymore. Maybe Miami or UCLA.

Williams and Polamalu were the best college football players I've ever seen suit up for SC. Love Bush (hehe) but those two dudes seem like afterthoughts when people talk about SC.

Well like I said, we're talking about a season where you have an incumbent Heisman Trophy QB, and all the media wants to talk about is Sam Darnold.

I don't think you'll see the "celebrity" factor to the degree that we saw in '03. At the time, LA didn't have an NFL team. UCLA was average. So in terms of football, USC was the biggest show in town.

Such a scenario will be less likely with the Rams and Chargers there now, unless they are both absolutely terrible.

I remember that game too. Bush had like 500 total yards that game. He made a Sanders-esqe 60 or 70 yard run where he zig zagged across the field for a score. Made defenders look silly that year.

Bush TD run

That's the thing.

And you're not going to see Miami like that again too.

Will all these - close the door - compliance factors.

Miami and USC were products of the time and both were fun in the sun high scoring offenses with celebrities. Although USC had Snoop Dogg and Miami had 2 Live Crew.
