+1
If you're a sportswriter, and you think Simmons sucks, why no just work hard and be better than him?
There's just no reason to write a sports article about a sportswriter who isn't retiring or recently dead. It's about sports, not the writers.

I'm not big into gambling
I do think he mails it in a lot. If there is a column featuring movie quotes -- really, its best to skip it.
There are things I really admire about him. He created this niche out of nothing. He really is the pre-emeinent sports blogger, and I do like that he approaches things as "the guy next door". He likes pop culture and sports. Cool. So do I. And that is a nice hook -- sports are supposed to be fun. I like that he gets the goofy.
But the quality of his work really has gone into steep decline. Which is why it was nice to see that Phil Jackson column today. It was a reminder that when he puts his mind to it, he's a great writer.

Simmons was all downhill after that amazing Karate Kid piece he did
This, and when he started focusing on podcasts instead of writing.

quote:He is the reason I discovered that I don't mind a sports writer/reporter who has a pronounced or vague bias as long as it is an informed bias. Simmons is a Celtics fan, and he never hides his love for the Celtics behind the fake veil of "professionalism," but he knows as much about the NBA as anyone out there, which is the most important thing there is.

quote:Not shocking. He wrote a book that makes Atlas Shrugged look like Hop on Pop, and he recently became a father, and he has been focusing a lot on The B.S. Report, so it's obvious why he would become both less prolific and less...umm...good as a writer.

3500 words of showy, pretentious writing that basically amounts to "i'm jealous of Bill Simmons because i'm so much smarter than him."
The BS Report is really made by the guests, especially when the comedians are on. Norm MacDonald was awesome.

Simmons is my favorite sportswriter...this guy is an idiot!

On the TV front, Simmons spent a few years proudly reminding people of his refusal to watch shows like House, The Wire or Arrested Development.
WTF? Am I reading this wrong? Simmons just wrote a HUGE article comparing the NBA Playoffs to The Wire and he said it was the greatest show ever, and I agree with him.

No he did not.

Worse, like Klosterman, his analysis of sporting events now largely constitutes analyzing how he might come to analyze the sporting events later, and how he has to think about how he will reevaluate the hypothetical in light of outcomes that haven't even happened.)
These quotidian discoveries are announced to readers, with little acknowledgement that they themselves might have already gone through them. It's like Vasco de Balboa shaking you awake to proclaim that he's discovered your toilet. After spending years arrogantly defending his unwillingness to watch even an episode of The Wire, Simmons broke down and watched it, decided it was the greatest show in history (after years of popular criticism saying as much), then wrote about that revelation numerous times and at length, over the course of years. No wonder he loves Klosterman so much. Both of them riff on the same vain logical process but from different precincts of cultural shallowness. Both seem to subscribe to the old medieval theory of sight: the world is alit for their glance being shone upon it.
This is the worst thing about him. He can never be wrong, he's petty, insecure, easily offended, childish and frankly pompous in his belief that everything he's done with his buddies or how he sees a game is the first time that has ever been done.
He peaked or (as he would say or rather write a 10,000 word piece about) "jumped the shark" in 2004. It's been retread analysis (flashback columns ad nausea) and borrowing his readers ideas for years now. The rest is just B.S. puerile giggles from jokes that make his 5 year old do that roll eyes thing...

Nothing is going to destruct Bill Simmons, by the way.
He has his following. They'll stick to him through anything.

I like Simmons. Ironically, I wish he would never talk about hockey (which thankfully he doesn't do often, but probably will a ton these next few weeks). That's really the only time I don't like him. But other than that, he's good.

Seems strange to take Bill Simmons so serious that someone would write that long of a review of him.
The guy's idea of an article is writing running diaries of his trips to Vegas.
I like him and think he is entertaining but to view him as some serious Lupica type writer seems strange IMO
