There needs to be another popular team on the MSB because the Braves thread is only one that stays on topic. So since it does lets talk some Braves....

quote:

So, in the end, the Braves had added Justin Upton, B.J. Upton and Chris Johnson, while losing Michael Bourn, Martin Prado, Randall Delgado and (don't forget) Chipper Jones. They replaced backup catcher David Ross, who had a good year, with Gerald Laird, and also traded starter Tommy Hanson for reliever Jordan Walden.

2012 WAR via Baseball-Reference:

Old Braves
Bourn: 6.0
Prado: 5.4
Jones: 2.7
Ross: 0.8
Delgado: -0.3
Hanson: -0-9
Total: 13.7

New Braves
B.J. Upton: 2.6
Justin Upton: 2.1
Johnson: 0.7
Walden: 0.3
Laird: 0.0
Total: 5.7

So am I saying the Braves will be eight wins worse than the 94 they won in 2012? No. For starters, Justin Upton is likely to be much better in 2013 after playing through a thumb injury last season. The Braves also have several other positives: Jason Heyward and Freddie Freeman are still young enough to improve; they get a full year of Andrelton Simmons at shortstop and we'll see if he really is the second coming of Ozzie Smith on defense; McCann could bounce back from his injury-plagued season; they'll get a full year of Kris Medlen in the rotation, a full year of Paul Maholm and a maybe full year of second-half Mike Minor instead of first-half Mike Minor.

However, until Beachy returns from Tommy John the fifth starter right now is probably Julio Teheran, who had a 5.08 ERA in Triple-A. The Braves still reportedly have $10 million left in their budget if they want to spend it, so I wonder if they'll go after one of the veteran free agents still available (Kyle Lohse may be too expensive, but maybe Joe Saunders).

The biggest problem I see is the Braves were seventh in the NL in runs scored in 2012 and have lost their three best OBP guys. They've replaced .377, .359 and .348 with .355, .326 and .298. The Braves also didn't have one starter returning who threw 200 innings last year.

All that said: I like this team a lot. There is some variability here: Heyward and Justin Upton could be MVP candidates to something far less. Medlen could be a Cy Young contender based on his amazing 12-start run last year or something far less. Minor could be a solid No. 3 or a No. 5. Can Tim Hudson, at 37 going on 38, churn out another solid season? I do see the Braves as a 95-win team. What's your take? Will the Braves improve on their 94 wins of 2012?

So I know all the Braves fans are fapping because Justin is a good young talent with a lot of potential to become an MVP candidate but the Braves obviously still have concerns. No team is complete and could the NL East become the AL East? With Atlanta/Washington playing the roll of Yankees/Boston? (by this I mean in way of competitiveness)

Bourn and Prado's WARs were inflated by dWAR. They had good years, but probably not 5-6 win years IMO. I also really doubt the Uptons have 2 win years this year.

Interesting stuff.

Team definitely has some question marks. But I feel like it will just really be able to bond quickly. JHey and Freeman are both estastic. Top to bottom it's a better lineup then it was a few days ago. Both from R-L alternation to the fact that 1-6 are not easy outs.

And they entire lineup can hit the ball out of the park.

Can we get on base enough? Will high K numbers be a problem? That remains to be seen.

Also not concerned about the rotation. It's a deep rotation and we will get Beachy back.

Agree with Whitie. I believe those numbers are skewed.

Plus Bourn went nuts the first half and then was just above hot garbage the second half. Doubtful he's going to half like that ever again. Especially with the high HR totals.

With Uptons you never know what you will get, both are talented players but neither has seemed to put it together for a full season.

In some respects BJ comes off as Uggla as a hitter, he has produced good power numbers with a low average, a lot of strike outs, and low OBP (Uggla actually gets on base a higher clip than Upton throughout their careers but Upton has ability to steal bases and is better defensively)

If Justin comes back and plays closer to his MVP season plus Freeman/Heyward continue to improve they may offset the holes that are in the lineup.

I think we will at least make the Wildcard with our line up. Maybe even win the East if the Uptons play up to their potential. If they don't I still see our defense and our pitching carrying us to a wild card

No reason Atl should not win at least the WC....

Washington
Dodgers
Giants
Reds
Cardinals

are only real contenders, I still think Washington wins the East because of their pitching with Atlanta winning 100 games and the first WC. I doubt more than 4 games separates the two teams all season unless injuries hit hard.

No reason they shouldn't this season, a full season of Trout will help plus Hamilton/Pujols in that lineup. Hamilton may regress a bit as would Trout but they should be more consistent 1-9.

Pitching will be key after Wilson and Weaver, I just think Rangers lost too much an A's aren't gonna repeat
