I just hope Fredi doesn't force him into the top of the lineup just because he has speed, although we all know good and well he's going to
He would need to be down in the 6 or 7 spot of the lineup.

im not being one of those i didn't want him anyways kind of guys.. cuz i do want beltran.. but if braves had and gave up a brown caliber player.. (from what im hearing) especially a positional player.. i'd be a little bummed.
mets fans are pumped at the possibility of triples galore in citi field with him and reyes.
this combined with all the nfl activity is gonna make my head explode.. i hate how nothing happens and then ALL this stuff goes down at once.

thanks for your honesty. if SF does give up Brown i won't be too happy about it. like i've said all along i don't want to overpay for Beltran, especially when we're already sitting atop a weak division that we could win without him. Brown can, like at Citi Field, thrive in ATT park that sees lots of triples and doubles.

yo Swamp you seem to be pretty knowledgeable about this stuff.. is there any kind of agreement the Giants could reach with Beltran as part of a trade that would keep him in San Fran next year as well?

Yep. The smart thing to do would be to let him bat at the bottom of the order and only move him up to leadoff if it looks like he's able to get back to where he used to be. He has some power, so at the very worst he would be a slightly more productive version of Nate or Schafer. Unfortunately, we have Fredi, so he would bat leadoff from day one. We might even see Schafer in left to get a speedy 1-2 punch at the top of the order.

I don't think it can be implanted in the trade agreement but talks can certainly happen when dealing with things like that
As already said, Boras had a big hand in all these negotiations and you better believe he was pushing Giants just for the fact that he believes that a long term deal is already in place or will be pretty shortly after the trade is finalized.
The Giants aren't giving up a top prospect without knowing that they have a very very good chance of keeping Beltran so I would expect a deal to most likely be announced not too long after the trade.
But also, it is Boras so who knows. He likes his clients to hit the open market.

Heyman said earlier whichever of the Giants/Braves don't get Beltran, the other would likely get Upton. If we accomplish that without trading any of the Core 4, then I'm happy with that.
Yeah, Upton is just such an iffy quantity.
IF you get a motivated, focused Upton, you get a gamechanging type of player.
If you get the guy who is lackluster, lazy and not focused... you get deadweight.
Now, Upton is a tremendous CF, so that's a big boost. He's even better than Schafe, and he's better with the stick (not hard to do).
Upton would be 2 on my list behind Beltran, but Beltran has his risks too. Can he play CF and stay healthy? Upton's risks are can be motivated/focused? I liked Beltran more because you knew his bat would have impact. Upton.. it's a maybe.

thanks man those were my thoughts as well. Sabean isn't an idiot. he's not going to give up he #2 or #3 overall prospect for JUST a two-month rental who can easily go elsewhere after the season. there will have to be some strings attached.
if that's not the case Sabean will get run the frick out of town. Giants fans are all about holding on to good prospects and high draft picks. they don't take kindly to expensive outsiders. especially after the Barry Zito debacle.
ETA: swamp i'm going to move this discussion to the Beltran to SF thread. don't want to clog up the ATL thread with this stuff. come over there if you have any more thoughts.

R2R, even if the Giants are able to extend Beltran, why do you think Sabean blinked and gave up Wheeler? They had no competition for Beltran in terms of top prospects. Singleton, Brown, Cosart, Minor, Delgado, etc. were all off limits.

I don't see Fredi as being a particularly motivating force, but he might be different in the clubhouse than he is in the dugout. I know a big reason everyone loved playing for Bobby was the fact that if he felt they had been screwed over by a bad call he would go out there and stick up for them. I think last night was the first time I've ever seen Fredi actually yell at an umpire.

Yeah, that's my concern.
The guys who would have to direct/motivate him would be Chip and Mac. Who are capable.
But Longo tried in Tampa with little results... and Maddon is probably the best "player's manager" around and still couldn't get him going. He's just a frustrating guy.

Hopefully change of scenery + the NL is all he needs. Maybe he hates the TB clubhouse
Posted on 7/27/11 at 1:41 pm to OBUDan
Assuming we trade for him, I'm hoping that going to a team that has a legitimate shot at the playoffs gets him going. It has to be rough on the Tampa players to know that if they played anywhere but the AL East with the Evil Empire and the More Eviler Empire they'd at least have a chance every year.
Posted on 7/27/11 at 1:42 pm to Robot Santa
you do realize they played the Rangers in the ALDS last year, right?
