Watching the Cubs game on ESPN, and they spent a full minute talking about the Braves bullpen being sexy.

Well said. This seems to be common sort of response on this subject. Debating this topic has become an exercise in futility.

Like in a baseball way or in a "these guys look good with their shirts off" way. Either way, I'm not sure I agree. Or perhaps they were talking about the architecture of the actual bullpen at Turner Field.

Sexy as in the pen is nasty good. It is cause they were saying the White Sox pen is not sexy.

Jokingly said Craig Kimbrel is as sexy as it gets.

in general, it tells nothing about a player

no matter what you're looking at batting average for, there's a better stat

We should probably just give up. Some people dislike advancement of knowledge because they're too lazy to learn new things.

So did Medieval people, but eventually people accepted that the earth isn't flat.

What you said was extremely redundant.

Of course a GM isn't going to base his decisions solely on batting average.

Sometimes I wonder how some of you are smart enough to acquire internet access.

I think the both of you need to look up the term 'zero sum'.

How does the term zero-sum apply here?

Because sabertards, such as yourself and White Lobster, now totally disregard batting average. It's a meaningless stat that has no relevance and should be immediately ignored when talking about a players offensive capability.

To totally disregard one thing in favor of another is a zero sum approach.

That's not the meaning of zero-sum, so you should probably be the one to look it up.

quote:

In game theory and economic theory, a zero-sum game is a mathematical representation of a situation in which a participant's gain (or loss) of utility is exactly balanced by the losses (or gains) of the utility of the other participant(s). If the total gains of the participants are added up, and the total losses are subtracted, they will sum to zero.

One statistic is superior to the other, so that wouldn't be zero-sum.

Or maybe you meant zero-sum mentality:
quote:

Zero-sum mentality is the term used in community psychology to describe a way of thinking that hinges on the notion that "there must be one winner and one loser; for every gain there is a loss." Differing schools of thought believe that social justice is best attained through cooperative negotiation. In a business world: 0 sum: pay more to workers, you own less / pay less to workers, you get more

Again, the loser (batting average) would be less valuable than better measures (OBP, SLG, OPS, etc.) and therefore it wouldn't be zero-sum.

Also, I usually assume that when people start using sophomoric wordplay like "saber-tards" that they've run out of substantive points and counterpoints and have therefore resorted to name calling.
