Right-hander Kevin Gausman is headed to the Cincinnati Reds, sources tell ESPN. He was claimed off waivers from the Atlanta Braves. The 28-year-old has one more season remaining until he hits free agency following 2020 though could be a non-tender candidate this winter.

Pitching matchups for the series

Mon: Soroka (ATL) @ Odorizzi (MIN)
Tue: Foltynewicz (ATL) @ Berrios (MIN)
Wed: Fried (ATL) @ Perez (MIN)

Wow. He's been really bad but that was unexpected.

They asked AA about him potentially going to the pen on MLB Network Radio last week after the deadline and he basically laughed the idea off so didn't seem like there was any room for him. Easy way to save some $$$ ROS as there was no room for him anywhere down the stretch and he was sure to be non tendered.

So it’s just a straight up bait cut? Nothing in return other than salary relief?

Correct. Only straight waiver claims allowed in August now.

Folty starting tomorrow night and Fried bumped to Wednesday afternoon per Bowman.

Must be signed as the new Reds BP coach since that’s what he was throwing them on Friday night.

Seems like Folty will likely start Wednesday as he was scratched yesterday.

Bowman said tomorrow night. My bad, Vol posted it.

Should open up a 40-man spot, too.

Reds must have seen a correctable issue with Gausman. There's not even a spot for him in the rotation unless there is an injury I am not aware of, so I'm curious as to what the plan is for him.

Has to be a move to the pen. Guy literally doesn't even have a third pitch.

Mentioned this in the general MLB thread but man.. I'm no fan of the Mets but if they come in and ultimately take the WC spot away from the Phillies and Nats that would be freakin' hilarious to me.

I think I read somewhere that the Melancon deal officially put them over where they really wanted to be salary wise, so I'm guessing AA figured "what the hell" and put Gausman on waivers to see if anyone bit.

I'm guessing this means that they likely decided to non-tender him after the season and figured might as well see if someone will take the rest of the salary for this year. Looks like it worked.

I got a ton of downvotes from Braves fans when I told them that when they traded for him last year.

and in all honesty, they might have the best chance at taking out the Dodgers in the NLDS out of the various wild card contenders. They have 5 guys that could legitimately shut them down in individual games.

He was very good for the Braves last year when he came over. Worth it considering they gave up virtually nothing and he was a big part of winning the division. O'Day never being able to join the pen hurt though considering how much they paid him in order to lessen prospect cost.

maybe you did, but we got him for basically nothing last year and he served his purpose in the stretch run, which was to solidify the rotation. We got to the playoffs...mission accomplished.

It didn't work out this year. We are still 7 games up. We cut our losses. Moving on. No big deal.

And it was deserved. Last year. He was an integral part of the second half of 2018.

But he’s clearly been awful this year outside of a couple of starts.

I would say the trade was a net loss for the Braves because of the O'Day salary. They could have used that money to beef up their bullpen or solidify their rotation or maybe even given Keuchel that money to have him for the entire year instead of three months.
