Everyone here is acting like it’s the Super Bowl, Woodstock, and the moon landing combined, even though no one had even heard of The World Games before they said they were coming here. The truth is it’ll probably bring a big crowd, but not that much bigger than other stuff we’ve hosted. The 500k+ number they keep throwing out is complete bullshite. Personally I can’t wait for it to just be over so people will shut up about it.

I’m a little surprised to see such a negative view on this from the board. I’m kind of looking forward to it. 100k plus visitors to the city (we will see I guess). Improvements to downtown and the Expressway.

I’ll be checking out something at Sloss after having a couple of beers at Back 40. And probably hit up something downtown after work.

What’s the down side? Maybe I’m just ignorant, uninformed or an optimist.

But I have to say that I’ve been pleased with Regions Field, Railroad Park, and Protective Stadium. And I think the city deserves some kudos for all three.

Just looked it up Birmingham beat out Lima Peru. How bad must Lima have been to have been beaten by Birmingham.

There’s barely anyone there.

Looks pretty full except for seats behind the stage.

Thank you, City of Birmingham, for bringing an event to the city that does nothing but provide a very lame 15 minutes of not so much fame.

Enjoy sitting in your cookie cutter suburb then, brah.

Yea crowd looks pretty good besides the areas they aren’t seating people because of the stage.

Opening Ceremonies” are tonight. Just curious, has anyone here outside of Central Alabama even heard of this event?

What is this? I’ve, honestly, never heard of it. Is it new? Is it televised?

It’s on cbs. No it’s not new, been around for a long time, just hasn’t been hosted in the US since the 80’s. Is it a bid deal? No not really, but cool it’s here.

You might have blurry vision. There’s a lot of space on those bleachers.

I just looked it up, and it looks…odd. Some of it at least. Lifesaving? Flag football? Tug of war? What is this, field day? Bowling?
Billiards?

Not really negative. It's certainly a positive because it's better than nothing and gets Bham something on it’s resumè so we could hopefully get better things.

That said, the marketing really was over the top and they forced a lot of BS about its impact on the region.

I’m most looking forward to “breaking” (break dancing I think) and parkour. Sumo is sold out.

I plan to go to some random stuff. Also bought tics to gold medal softball game though I’m not sure I can make it to Hoover on Wed night.

Did you just see that overhead shot? That’s not a bad crowd at all.

Yes there is a lot of really weird shite in the games. Sumo wrestling is going to be legit though
