I guess playing Northwoods did help his ball striking. Glad he was finally able to shoot under par in a Major round this year.

Golf was played for over 400 years before Par was accepted

Yet you say the entire game is based on par and I have the shitty opinion here

Par makes it easier to follow . If it didn’t exist, which it hasn’t for over 80% of the history of golf, it wouldn’t matter. Without Par golf can still be played 100% fine. Once again, that isn’t an opinion

I agree that "par" doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Total number of strokes is what counts. But this is a dumb argument to have in this thread

Par was standardized in 1911.

So 115 years ago. Should we also compare other sports to what they looked like over a century ago? Maybe your question should be why it was standardized and maybe you'll stop being a dumbass about this

But to your other point

Here's an article from when Ben Hogan won a tournament at Brook Hollow in 1946.

Quite a lot of references to par and how he shot relative to that number. Weird, considering it wasn't until TV in the 60s when people started caring about scores relative to par.

The lead of the article
quote:

Dallas, Texas (UP) — Golf’s little idol, bantam Ben Hogan, of Hershey, Pennsylvania, Sunday won the $10,000 Dallas Open championship with a four-over par 284 strokes, exactly the score he predicted five days ago would win over the long and well-trapped Brook Hollow County Club course. Par proved an elusive total to every one of the 83 professionals and amateur players who started the 72 hole medal play Thursday, but Hogan proved the most consistent of the lot as he tacked a 73, three over par, to his 54-hole total of 22 to give him a two-stroke lead over the field.

Not sure about the regular broadcast but the Open website has pretty much no ability to track the ball. Like no idea if these drives are in the fairway or not until the commentators say something.

Dude, you are arguing against a strawman

Par is fine to use and makes sense for fans following. It should stay as it makes tracking a tournament live so much easier

But one thing you said that it’s the entire point of golf is ludicrous, as total strokes is what matters and will always matter, and more importantly my main and only point, raw strokes is factually based on actual freaking data a better way to judge performances than score to par

That isnt controversial or even subjective. You have chooses to argue with a mouse in your pocket I guess while yelling about others arguing

When you start an argument stating X number of players will shoot in the 60s, yes how many strokes that is relative to par is 10000% relevant to that statement. You're saying that is a lot. Relative to what? What if the course was 9000 yards and was a par 78? How am I to know how good 69 strokes is and if having 20 players shoot that or better is a lot with no other information?

You argued with that, and then went on an idiotic tangent about par not even mattering. Why are the way you are about EVERYTHING

Rory playing the course exactly how the Euros said to on this hole, bomb and gouge

Rory you are the one leaving your face open and pushing every putt right, not the green

Rory just completely baffled that a putt might be straight.

I didn't get to watch earlier. Was Bryson bombing driver off every tee or hitting irons like most?

I’m traveling and have been watching off and on, but seems that he was going driver. I think I saw where he’d hit like 5 fairways all day. Doesn’t look like the dried out fescue on the dunes is very penalizing at all.

Maybe if the livbots and pride weren’t arguing about counting for 3 pages, there’d be a little insight on the actual golf being played.

That Rory bunker shot was simply amazing on his knees.
