might be thinking of some other distance, but it feels like the old record was only set a few months ago.

edit: I was thinking of him breaking the 5k record

It is the shoes... seriously it is the shoes.

Nike's Vaporfly and the varients have been allowed a rash of new records to be set this year both on the track and in marathons.

Are they really wearing alphafly and vaporflys on 10k track races?

I know all the elite marathoners are wearing those, but didn’t think they’re worn on a track.

Obviously, it is the spike variants. I haven't kept up recently and sanctioning bodies have been forcing Nike to introduce new models to comply as the rule changes but the Viperfly were the spikes of choice a few months ago.

Whole point of the vapor and alpha flys is the ridiculous cushioning and carbon plate. The tempo next% trainers aren’t even race legal due to the stack height.

What does the track variant offer ? And is it anything that’s considered controversial like the alphafly?

They offer the same energy recovery systems as the Nike road running shoes: Nike ZoomX foam, carbon fiber plate(s) and Nike Air Zoom technology. They have similar controversies attached to them and it all surrounds energy recovery.

I noticed I posted the wrong distance shoes, the ones I posted above are indeed Viperflys but they are the 100m specific shoes. The 8k-10k distance shoes are the Victoryfly below. The spikes are actually able to use two carbon plates (now illegal from road shoes) because the rules allow for a second plate for that attachment fo the spikes.

Shoes that aren't street legal? It's definitely not the 80's or 90's anymore.

Just out of curiosity, would wearing those shoes allow Mister Dad Bod running the Crescent City Classic to shave some time off of his run or do you need to already be a world class runner to get anything out of them?

Does a golfer shooting 100 really get a benefit of ProV1s. I would go more support. Mr dad bod isn't 125 lbs and that fluid. He needs more cushioning

A good amateur runner? Sure. Dad Bod guy? No, in fact they would increase his chances of getting hurt

It is likely Mr Dad Bod would increase his time more with work on technique but that is beside the point. Energy recovery works for every runner so Mr Dad Bod (assuming he is training as he has in the past) will be setting new PRs.

That said these shoes are RACE shoes, not training shoes a couple of hundred miles and they are toast. They are not cheap and they are not easy to find even now. So as long as MDB is willing to hunt the shoe and willing to pay $1 or so a mile in them then they stand up to their billing.

I am 50/50 on pace lights, they aren't substantially better than the really good pacers.
