I’m getting a weird feeling about Roland Garros if Rafa can’t play.
Imagine that story line.
I'm not buying Fed on clay courts. I can actually see him getting knocked out early.
Fed can't grind anymore. This is inarguable. It cannot be disputed. And you can't win clay matches against decent players -- much less tournaments -- without having to grind.

Why would Rafa not be able to play? He's playing in Monte Carlo, no?*
There's always a chance his knee won't hold up for the entirety of the clay stretch, but the dirt puts much less stress on it than hard courts do.

And the ranking points can be easier to obtain. When you play a 250 in Marseille or Delray Beach, you face a handful of guys in the top 20, whereas tournies like Sao Paulo or Cordoba you might see a Fognini or a Busta and a bunch of weaker players.
ATP point cherry-picking is certainly not limited to clay. Points are there to be vultured for the player willing to strategically travel to shitty cities all over the world.

Meet the new face of #nextgen tennis: 18 yo Felix Auger Aliassime. Let us pray that he does not meet the "15 minutes of fame" fate of Chung Hyeon. This boy good
The difference with FAA is that he's an ATHLETE. Long, lean, strong, quick, agile and the like. Chung has thunder thighs. Thunder thighs are generally not predictive of future success. I think I read a study on that once. Forget what it was called. Will report back.

Definitely.
I was referring to the times of the year when there's a choice between hard court and clay, implying that he went out of his way to play clay.
He was even registered for Marrakech, which is nuts for a North American when Houston is the same week.
ETA: Yeah I know Houston is clay.

Toni Nadal: "Rafael wants to continue playing, despite his physical problems. Until when? Who knows. Maybe two or three more years. What I’m saying is that Rafael is not a tennis player, he’s an injured person who plays tennis."

This is the problem. He will surely be playing Barcelona, Madrid, and Rome too. And we know he doesn't know how to give less than 100%. I wish him the best, but the track record isn't good over the last few years.

Novak at RG
4 Quarterfinals
4 Semifinals
3 Finals
1 Win
Roger at RG
4 Quarterfinals
2 Semifinals

1 Win
Of course there's a lot more to it than that. I won't be able to finish my reply until later tonight, but this thinking that he's wayyyyyyy behind the non-Rafas of the world on clay... that's what I'm not buying.

Wow, that's a crazy quote. When did he say that?

He should absolutely skip Barcelona, but he won't.
And he should skip either Madrid or Rome....I would suggest Madrid. But he won't.
So, yeah, you hope it holds up until RG, but certainly not a sure thing.

Oh, smug was a fine clay court player in his day. The second best clay courter in the world before Novak surpassed him circa 2011.
But he's 37 now. That's a big factor. Fed is still amazing when he can shorten points and let his shotmaking win the points for him. On clay, he can't do that nearly as well. More balls are gonna come back at him, transforming 3 shot rallies into 7 shot rallies. And it won't take long before you see a 37 year old man out there.
Just my $0.02

I dropped Delpo and picked up FAA.
Delpo is now on the waiver wire, and another owner has indicated he will be picking him up when it comes to his turn in the waiver wire priority rotation.
WE'll see if I regret this decision, but I needed to make a decision and pull the trigger on it, so I did just that. If he come back for Madrid I will be mega mega pissed, but whaddaya gonna do.

Aga definitely has to be included somewhere in this convo, but I actually think she's "kinda" pretty.
Pliskova isn't pretty at all. But man would I love to get balls deep in her.
I'm gonna start to keep an eye out for future members of the "Karolina Pliskova All Stars"

That's the thing. I'm not sure about this. When was he ever a grinder? That's just not his style. The only factor with age, in my opinion, is that it prevents you from putting together consistent great performances. And if he has an off day, he won't win vs. the top players whether he grinds or not.
When he lost to Anderson at Wimbledon, it wasn't about grinding. We only tend to say that when he loses a final in 5 sets vs. someone like Novak, which probably has more to do with Novak than anything. In other words, everyone else would lose too.
The other (main) reason I made that statement was... if 2019 ClaySmug isn't on the level of 2009 ClaySmug for whatever reason, who the hell would even be able to take advantage? There aren't even any decent clay specialists on tour anymore. Busta? Meh. Ramos? Ha. Ferrer? Lol.
If I went down the rankings and started grouping players by their chances of beating Federer on clay, it would look like this...
Definitely
Nadal
Very Likely
Djokovic
Probably
Thiem
Maybe
Zverev
Nishikori
Tsitsipas
Cilic
Khachanov
Coric
Monfils
Wawrinka
Schwartzman
Nope
Everyone else
So that leaves us with 3 guys we can safely say would be favored. And Thiem is not exactly proven on the big stage. Below that it's just a wasteland of youth and mediocrity.

Cool.
Toni is kind of a debbie downer, so maybe that quote should be taken with a smidgeon of salt, but I don't doubt that his knee tendinitis is a real thing and will flare up to a point where he cannot play on a "when" not "if" basis. So, he should manage his schedule better imho.
