IW is the most pretigious masters 1000 imo
eta being in the desert makes it all about the tennis.

novak vs kyrgios in the third round
novak has never taken a set from nick
that should be an intense match

I'm not even sure if you have to qualify that statement as being opinion. It's almost universally recognized as the top Masters 1000 event. And sometimes the "5th Major".
And if we're talking the venue, which includes both the grounds and the stadiums, it's on par with the majors, and it's actually quite a bit nicer than Roland Garros, which is apparently kind of a claustrophic dump.

So, I just learned something. IMG used to have a 50% ownership interest in the tournament, but decided to sell that in 2006. It sold it to 30 investors, including, among others, the two guys who owned tennis magazine, the USTA, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, and Pete Sampras. It's unclear how much each owned.
Three or four years later, the tournament was getting bids from companies in china and elsewhere, and the investors were incentivized to sell their shares as it would have been profitable, but then the tournament likely wouldn't have stayed at Indian Wells. But then of course Larry Ellison swooped in and bought the whole damn thing. The price was undisclosed but rumored to be for 100 mill -- that's for the tournament, not for the grounds, which he also bought, incidentally.
Probably a nice little ROI for the 30 investors.

Larry and I are kindred spirits, you see.
quote:
“I could get myself in trouble with Roger [Federer] here, but I suppose my favorite tennis player of all time is Rafa [Nadal].” Larry Ellison, who has dined with Federer, is talking tennis, something that you get the feeling he’d do with anyone, starting with the guy sitting next to him on the bus. That is, if he rode the bus, instead of flying his own decommissioned fighter jets, sailing in the America’s Cup (Ellison’s BMW Oracle USA 17 won the 2010 event), or riding in the saddle of a mountain bike. “I don’t think Rafa’s a better tennis player than Roger, but I don’t think that a greater athlete than Rafa has ever played tennis. That agility in the semifinal against Murray at Wimbledon, remember that spinning, 270-degree backhand overhead that he hit, you remember that, don’t you? My cat can do that, but a human being can’t do it. What the hell?

Holy shite. I definitely did not know that.
I expect that to change.

If Delpo pulls out of Miami as well, my fantasy team is going to be in the hurt locker.

Billionaires pumping money into the sport for toys is a good thing. It's interesting that IMG owned that tournament because I think Stephen Ross owns IMG and now he has the Miami one.
I used to wonder why people love IW so much since it's kind of in the middle of nowhere, but it's just a beautiful facility and a really laid back atmosphere. It's way nicer than Toronto and step above Cincy, although Cincy is cool in its own right. I gotta get to Miami sometime.

Giron won NCAAs at UCLA a few years ago. I think he has just been floating around since that point. Seems like a really good kid.
