Honest question for the Warhawk fans.. what are your thoughts on Dr. Cofer's comments about ULM football this past week?

In a nutshell, he basically said that the future of ULM fotoball depends upon the alumni and fans. I interpreted it as a "put up or shut up" type of message. If alumni and fans don't get behind ULM football why have ULM football. I'm trying to find more on this. There was a thread on warhawk msg board.

Comments like those make sense. When supported, football carries an athletic program. When not supported, it is the most expensive sport to have.

Sounds like my old NLSC needs to drop back down to FCS football and hopefully establish a winning program at that level. Most people will support a winner. All other sports would still be at Div.I level.

I'm agree with both sides of this. I've always thought that ULM's major problems were from the lack of fan support over the years. I know there hasn't been much to cheer about, but it is ridiculous how bad it has become. LSU becoming the power it is in this same time span hasn't helped either. But it does kind of bother me to hear Dr. Coffer say that. I know it is not his fault, he's pretty much working with his hands tied. With the economy the way it is and the budget cuts, this was probably the worst time to fire a coach and look for another one with the hopes of moving the program along further. In the end, I feel like it is going to be the same old situation. Hopefully not though.

This has been a harsh, indirect blow to the program.

LSU is really good, always on tv, and always featuring someone from northeast Louisiana in a contributing role. Most would rather watch an LSU road game on ESPN than a ULM game in person.

LSU had 10 night games this year, and two day games. I think there's a big key. If ULM stages kickoff at 2pm every Saturday, you'll rarely have to choose between the ULM and LSU game. Also, in the event that the LSU game gets moved up to the day, simply push the ULM kickoff back to 7 or 8.

If I lived in the Monroe area and ULM did this, I would never miss a ULM game.

xiv - very good points. I am a double ULM grad, but a lifelong LSU fan. To make us choose between the two practically EVERY freaking weekend is stupid! Its LSU everytime!!! Schedule the dang games at the times LSU is NOT playing. I would go to every ULM home game that did not conflict with LSU! And I did this year and sat in the freaking rain (not ulm's fault - but they had really bad luck with the rain).

<------This is what we do over here so as not to affect the Hog crowds from staying away from their games so they can come to ours.

This is exactly why ESPN doing football games virtually 6 days a week has been good for schools like ULM.

I saw some games when they were NLU and there was a fair amount of pride in the university - football and basketball. BUT, if LSU is winning ala the last decade, even the biggest ULM supporters will stay home and watch the LSU game/attend a house party with LSU game on. You might here k104.1 FM in the guest bedroom.

Sad, but I have personally seen many, many NLU fans turn into this...sad for NLU anyway. And I call them NLU out of respect. That's the way it should still be.

Todd Berry for head coach I guess Tech just keeps on winning... I really feel sorry for the players and fans for ULM - even with playing home games in AR the money is just not there to stay in D1A.

Good luck to ULM and I really mean that - they had a very solid program in D1AA and unlike McNeese could actually win some games in the playoffs!

Yep. I vividly remember NLU's '87 playoff run...the Eastern KY game when Teddy Garcia made that GW FG was pretty special. I believe they played Northern Iowa the week after and then beat Marshall up in the circus tent in Idaho.

I too feel bad for ULM football. Berry's record on paper is not a step in the right direction IMO, Weatherby has a more successful career. It is very hard to build/rebuild your football program, try to get people excited and attend games, support the program and admin goes out and does something like this?

Why not Tech with them? Would you rather peak out at the Indy Bowl in 1A or win a c'ship at the FCS level?

I realize Tech's program is in better shape than NLU's, but seriously Tech fans...what are your best hopes for remaining in 1A?

He's 100 percent correct. Tech and NLU BOTH need this rivalry to continue and both need to play McNeese. The Wac and Sunbelt are not producing much in-confernce rivalries...Tech and Idaho? NLU and Troy? Please...

Unless they can get more fans in the stands, the NCAA will make that decision for them.
