The Sun Belt is at nine right now, and I believe South Alabama and Texas State are on the way. Too bad Tech has the delusion that they have; if they didn't, the Sun Belt could have 12 and a title game.
Sun Belt East - FAU, FIU, MTSU, USA, Troy, WKU
Sun Belt West - ASU, ULL, ULM, LT, UNT, TSU
I'd love to see that.
The Sun Belt it at 9 right now. S. Alabama will be the 10th team when they join the Conference in 2013...(haven't heard anything about Texas state). I wonder if the Sun Belt will play a SBC Championship Game when USA is added? Personally, I think it would be awesome. It would give you a true Conference Champion, unlike some years when there's a 2 or 3-way tie. See below...
2001:
Middle Tennessee State 5-1
North Texas 5-1
2005:
Arkansas State 5-2
Louisiana-Lafayette 5-2
ULM 5-2
2006:
Middle Tennessee State 6-1
Troy 6-1
2007:
Troy 6-1
Florida Atlantic 6-1

Something tells me that CUSA will fall apart in the next decade. I think the Big East will end up having to pick up a couple CUSA schools (UCF and Memphis being obvious choices, with Marshall and ECU being distant maybes). I would love to see the remainder of CUSA split into two separate conferences and pick up SBC schools to fill out their lineup:
New SWC:
East
Arkansas State
Louisiana-Monroe
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana Tech
Tulane
Tulsa
West
Houston
North Texas
Rice
Southern Methodist
Texas-El Paso
Texas State
New SIAA:
East
Appalachian State
East Carolina
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Georgia Southern
Marshall
West
Alabama-Birmingham
Middle Tennessee State
South Alabama
Southern Mississippi
Troy
Western Kentucky
This is the first thing you have said that I agree with. That would be a great conferenceBut there are some FCS teams in there. (Unless Appy and Ga Southern are planning on going 1A)
Look, we are just going to have to disagree. I certainly see your point about these two teams playing, but I don't think it will happen anytime soon. Call it elitism or whatever, but Tech is going in a different direction than ULM right now. Whether that is good or bad will not be known for a few years.

Maybe not Appy and GSU specifically, but there are a few Southern teams who have for a while been considering the move up: Delaware, Florida A&M, Chattanooga, Charlotte, Georgia State, Missouri State, Western Carolina, Texas-San Antonio, Lamar, Sam Houston State.

I've tried not to respond to this thread because this topic really pisses me off. Having been born and raised in Monroe and grew up going to NLU games, I know how great this game was every year. I absolutely hate LA Tech. It is the way I was raised. I like to see them lose every game they play. If you know anything about this university and you are not a fan, you should know about the unsubstantiated arrogance they have. These are my true feeling about them, but I do have common sense. Currently they are a better program moving in a better direction than ULM. But this is only since Dooley arrived, meaning their current improvement is only three years old. To hear them speak you would think it is decades old. I believe ULM would have beat them in 05-07. Has Tech been more successful in IA than ULM? Absolutely. ULM had no plans when they moved up and it took a toll within a few years. Being Independent is a death sentence unless you are ND or Army/Navy. If you look back, ULM had some success early on. Beat Kentucky, Miss St., almost beat Auburn, BYU, and played well against others. They also got humiliated as well. I haven't looked, but Tech can probably say the same thing. Should ULM & Tech be playing every year? That is a stupid question. There would be nothing but positives for both teams if they renewed the rivalry. Tech absolutely is a Sun Belt team. I don't have a problem with them wanting to do better than the Sun Belt. I do have problem with them thinking they are better than the Sun Belt. No one believes they are except them. The Sun Belt is getting better every year, Tech would only add to the improvements. I think ULM should look at Tech to see how they are improving their program. They have a great young coach, they're improving their facilities, they're being proactive. It seems ULM is in a state of content. I believe Weatherbie is a lame duck coach this season. His contract runs out after this season and I don't believe he will be resigned unless he has a winning season and goes to a bowl. I could keep going, sorry this is so long.

and also Texas St. I'm fairly certain that UTSA and Texas St have already expressed interest in joining the Sun Belt when their football teams get to D1A.

they will end up having to get rid of Denver and UALR, and possibly even UNO, with South Al starting football with the intent of going 1A and UTSA and TSU wanting to join, they could make a 12 team football conference that would still be decent in basketball, and would still be really good in baseball. I think from there, UNO and UALR's best option would be to join the SLC replacing TSU and UTSA, while I don't really give a shite what Denver does.

Nevertheless, the schools who have a definite intention and ability to go to FBS are Georgia Southern, Georgia State, South Alabama, Texas-San Antonio, and Texas State. Add them to the mix, and you have a 14-team Sun Belt football conference, which I think would be very interesting.
East
Florida Atlantic
Florida International
Georgia Southern
Georgia State
Middle Tennessee State
South Alabama
Troy
West
Arkansas State
Louisiana-Lafayette
Louisiana-Monroe
North Texas
Texas-San Antonio
Texas State
Western Kentucky
I dig it.

I liked the posts about the old GSC. See, I think more schools should be moving down . . . not up. It has become absolutely ridiculous. And, the funny thing is how many alumni can be persuaded to smoke the dope that is the dream of Div. I success for their schoools.
Anyway . . . how do I put this in a sophisticated way . . . La Tech is a big pussy for not playing NLU (I'm going to refuse to use the letters ULM OR ULL from now on . . .
)

What makes them a huge pussy is that they cancelled the series originally after 1990; NLU had owned their asses for 12 years. And they just happened to want to renew the series in 1997 when they'd gotten decent again. Funny how that works out.
quote:I disagree on account of the fact that a school makes more money in FBS than in FCS. If you can meet the requirements, I see no reason not to want to move up. Delaware, Montana, and Villanova come to mind as three schools who could not only meet the requirements, but also be competitive immediately.

Denver is too expensive a travel destination for a lot of the Sunbelt schools to travel there twice a year. Also, if you have a 14 team football conference, that equals 17 basketball teams, completely absurd. I think one of the Georgia schools would become an option when/if Troy would get picked up by CUSA, Western Kentucky would also get a look from CUSA if they improved their football program, because both basketball teams and their baseball team could already compete in CUSA.

It is better for our balance sheet to have a 1 and done with a 1AA or a home and home with Houston, Southern Miss, Navy, or Army rather than doing a home and home with U-LAMO.
Louisiana Tech is making alot of investments in facilities. Corporate sponsorships are up, LTAC memberships are up, season ticket sales are up. We are building. U-LAMO is dying on the vine.
The U-LAMO fan here is just whining. Their real gripe should be with their own University. I don't see what the hell this has to do with LSUA&M.

It would actually be your income statement, not your balance sheet. But could you cite some numbers supporting this? Just curious, how many of your conference away games are profitable. Other than probably Boise and maybe Fresno, chances are good it costs more to travel and play the game than is paid to you. I certainly can't imagine a trip to Nevada or Idaho being better than playing ULM in Monroe. No telling what a loss that a Hawaii trip causes.
