Tech isn't afraid of ULM. Sure, it would suck to lose to ULM, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. I think Tech would rather ULM just cease to exist. We think Tech would be better off if the Monroe fans would drive to Ruston to watch games instead of Baton Rouge.

I'm sure the feeling is mutual.

Population #s:
Monroe - 53,051
Ouachita Parish - 150,051
Ruston - 20,546
Lincoln Parish - 42,561
Don't plan on ULM disappearing. If the ULM administration/athletic dept/Monroe itself could ever get their shite in order, ULM could really blossom. Way more potential in Monroe than Ruston. But we know who the powers that be are at the City of Monroe. ULM should really follow Tech's lead as far as finding a new head coach, possibly AD. Although Dooley being both is a bit silly. But what ever works for him.

Tech and ULM, should be merged into a single university. Classes could continue at each site, but you could eliminate a university president, as well as one whole set of administration. For example, the business faculty in Monroe could report to a dean of the college of business based in Ruston. Likewise the leadership of some other college could be Monroe-based. This could open up new majors available to students based at one another's sites. For example, a former Tech student would be able to major in pharmacy. A Monroe-based student could study engineering.
It would very easy for department heads to meet with all staff via teleconference. Heck it's only a 30 mile trip to visit in person. That goes on frequently in the corporate world where, for example, a company has multiple sites in a metropolitan area.
The combined school would be >20K and the clear number two in state.
Grambling should be rolled in as well, but would not happen (as will not my recommendation) due to politics.
This would result in a single, stronger university than the current two, and make more sense, given that is least populated part of the state.
To address the athletic issue, the programs could be merged and to compromise, adopt an agreed upon new name and mascot. Home games could be split between the two stadiums, basketball facilities, etc. Add the 10-15K football attendance each draws on average and you get 20-30K, right in UH, Memphis, USM territory.
My modest proposal.

Three times the population....Shouldn't it be head and shoulders above Tech? Enrollment, programs, athletics, etc.

You would think so. But Tech is an older university and Ruston doesn't really have anything else but Tech. Those are not good enough reasons though. It is more of a product of inadequate administration on ULM's part. There hasn't been a real sense of urgency to improve the football program in a long time. Monroe pretty much sucks nowadays when it comes to supporting the university. It's sad when hunting can take priority over football games. Nothing against hunting, but ULM only has 5 home games per year.

I agree. I would probably not be a fan of the new school because I graduated from "Louisiana Tech University." But the future of that school would be brighter than the current set-up. They should have left ULM as a JUCO... it is stupid to have so many colleges in this small state, while the state offers so few jobs. Having 4 colleges in North Louisiana where most of the population are either farmers or real estate agents is a bit ridiculous.

The basic problem is that local politicians around the state insisted on having Universities where they actually should have lower level colleges. McNeese, ULM, ULL, NW,ASLU and NLU have no business being Universities and drawing tons of funding from the State U. Add to that the tradition of the HBCU like Southern and Grambling. The directional schools should be community collges or 4 year colleges. The University status is for LSU. Tech can be the engineeering school of North LA and can be Div 1
As always in Louisiana local politics is what drives things

Don't disrespect Johnny's.. they'll eat you alive on here.
Wait. Which campus has the best dining plan. ULM-Tech???

I still pass on Gumbo or Jamabalaya around here. I had good Etoufee 25 years ago in Mnahattan and they called it traditional Lousiana peasant food. My wife had to hold me back because I was yelling who you calling a peasant

If Coenen Cafeteria is still around ULM, they would be the best. Others on campus

Tech is not afraid to play ULM. Louisiana Tech recently offerred ULM $325,000 to take a bus ride to Ruston and play Tech. ULM refused. Explain that.
I really doubt that LSU fans are very interested in Tech/ULM cyberspace "battles". They have bigger fish to fry in the SEC. Hopefully one day soon, Louisiana Tech will have the support and success LSU enjoys on the field.
Thank you guys for letting me support my school on your forum.
