No, it started in 2001.

Decades are periods of ten years. Centuries are periods of 100 years.

The first decade comprised was this set of years (all CE): {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10} The second was {11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20}. The third was {21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30} By the end of the first century, it was: {91, 92, 93,...,100}. Thus, the first year of the second century was 101, not 100. If that were not the case, then the first century would only have 99 years, and thus would not have been a century. When we extrapolate this forward, we find that EVERY century starts with a X01 or XX01, and every decade starts are X1, not X0.

Thus, both the current decade and the current century began in 2001.

So there was never a year 0? When a baby is born they are 0 years and X days old, are they not? You don't automatically start at 1.

Show me a year 0 in our history books.

We went from 1 BCE to 1 CE. There was no Year 0.

Granted, I'm being ultra technical here, because the common use of the term "decade" refers to XXY0-XXY9, which is equally valid, particularly in discussions like this. But to be technically accurate, since there was no year 0, all decades start with 1 as the last digit.

yeah but the baby just started its life

Whereas when calenders were started or when recorded dating started we were already here. We started with 1 as a reference point

When you are talking decades in terms of sports, I believe it more often than not begins with a year 0 and goes through 9.

For example the plaque on Rosenblatt lists "Champions of the 1990s" and goes from 1990 through 1999.

That's true but we generally say "Team of the 90s" or "Team of the 00s" while we say the 20th or 21st century.

AD 1-9/10 doesn't really have much meaning for us.
