Lets invade the socialized medicine queers and erase this game from the history books World Superpower style.

And it is simplistic morons like you that are the exact reason people that are real fans of the sport get pissed. I have no problem with nationalism, but people who hate on the sport, call it stupid, etc. are all of a sudden huge supporters. That's how it basically is with Hockey and Soccer.

You just said you have no problem w/ nationalism but then called me a simplistic moron for expressing national pride.
Who's the simplistic moron in this equation?
Posted on 2/28/10 at 5:19 pm to Jamohn
My point was that national pride is a great thing, but idiots (not saying you aren't a fan) that continually hate on certain sports only to become a fan during a world tournament when their team is successful is pointless and stupid.
All of a sudden, everyone is a hockey fan, and once the US lost, they went back to hating it.

it's ok to be a bandwagon hockey fan in the south f@ckstick considering we don't grow up around it, would you rather us root for somebody else, take your chocolate drink bottle and shove it where the sun doesn't shine

Most of us don't care for it. So because USA was playing, we watched. When we lost, we went back to not caring. It's not that difficult.

I think I'm staying on the bandwagon

Watching is not a problem, CNB. I have no problem with getting interested. el tigre may be different in that regard.
It's just annoying when people who openly hate the sport all of a sudden become "Fans". I think most people are like you described. Just casually watching out of interest since the US is in it. I have no issue with that.
Soccer, though, is a much bigger issue in this regard. So many people on here simply hate on it, yet once the US wins a game or looks halfway decent they are a fan and love it until the US loses.

I don't think many realists thought the US would take the gold
I didn't think they'd medal, so they certainly surpassed my expectations.

That's not what it's about at all.
It's the Olympics, you cheer for your country..doesn't matter what the sport is, you cheer for the U.S. and want them to do well.
I don't get why people can't understand that

FWIW, I agree with this (though I don't think there are many on here like that).
I don't mind people that don't usually watch hockey and just watch this, but people that say it sucks and then watch this are hypocrites.
Posted on 2/28/10 at 5:27 pm to SwampDonks
So basically we have to talk about the US national team every year bewteen Olympics in order to root for them

I think you keep confusing fans of the sport w/ fans of the team.
If people can look past their personal biases, distaste, indifference, or lack of understanding to/of a sport and cheer for success of their team b/c of the worldwide implications of international pride, bragging rights, etc., I would say that is to be commended, not ridiculed. But that's just my opinion on the matter.
Now if said people start showing up at work and breaking down the games as if they are experts and pretending they know wtf they are talking about or that they've been fans forever, I can see why that would piss off a real fan of the sport.

This stuff annoys me as well, but I didn't see many of that in the threads, either (only a few people, and it was just because their comments were so off-base that it was obvious they didn't know what they were talking about).

I think that is my point. It's not that they become fans of the sport. It's that they start acting like they are because the US is all of a sudden winning.
Watching it is one thing, but I think this irks me more with Soccer. Hockey gets hated on by a good bit of people, but soccer continually gets blasted. If you hate a sport so much why do you care if the US wins?
But you are right, we are both kind of making similar points.

No, we went back to ignoring it. I love the Olympics but I'm not that into the NHL. So what?
